Rare Superman Comic Fetches $15 Million in Private Sale
A copy of the comic book that introduced the world to Superman in 1938 has been sold privately for an impressive $15 million. The sale of a high-grade copy of Action Comics No. 1 was announced on Friday, marking one of the largest transactions in comic book history. Fewer than 100 copies of this iconic comic are known to exist, according to Vincent Zurzolo, president of Metropolis Collectibles and ComicConnect, which facilitated the sale.
Significance of Action Comics No. 1
The staggering sale price solidifies Action Comics No. 1 as one of the most valuable comic books ever sold, though the auction record remains held by Superman No. 1, published in 1939, which sold for $9.12 million in November. Zurzolo emphasized the comic’s importance, stating, “This is the advent of the golden age of comics, and Action Comics No. 1 is the holy grail of holy grails.”
This comic book is widely regarded as the first American comic to feature superheroes, contributing significantly to the genre’s explosive rise in popularity during the mid-20th century. Both the buyer and seller of this particular copy opted to remain anonymous.
A Storied History
The history of this specific copy is as captivating as its sale price. Originally purchased for just 10 cents, it was bought by actor Nicolas Cage in 1996 for $150,000. In 2000, the comic was stolen from Cage’s home during a party, remaining lost until 2011, when it was discovered in a storage unit in California. During its eleven-year absence, the comic’s value increased dramatically, as noted by Stephen Fishler, CEO of Metropolis and ComicConnect, who stated, “the issue skyrocketed in value.”
Once recovered, the comic was returned to Cage, who later sold it for $2.2 million at auction. Zurzolo remarked, “If this wasn’t stolen, it would have been sold with the rest of his collection much earlier and would have sold for far less. In essence, because of the theft and recovery, Nick’s windfall on this comic book was enormous.”
The Certified Guaranty Co., known for its expertise in authenticating and grading collectibles, assigned Action Comics No. 1 a grade of 9.0, indicating that while the comic is well-preserved, it exhibits minor defects. It joins a select group of comics that have sold for millions, with at least eight copies of Action Comics No. 1 now having sold for over $1 million, according to the CGC.
This recent sale serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal and value of comic book collectibles, particularly those that mark significant cultural milestones like the introduction of Superman.
