Korean Cinema Icon Ahn Sung-Ki Passes Away at 74
Renowned South Korean actor Ahn Sung-ki, known for his remarkable contributions to cinema over six decades, has passed away at the age of 74. His agency, the Artist Company, confirmed that Ahn died from complications related to blood cancer at Seoul’s Soonchunhyang University Hospital on March 15, 2024.
In a heartfelt statement, the Artist Company described Ahn as a figure who “has been with the history of popular culture in Korea with a deep sense of mission and consistent dedication to acting.” The agency highlighted his ability to resonate with audiences across generations through his extensive body of work. Ahn’s career spanned more than 100 films, establishing him as a beloved figure in the industry and earning him the title of “the nation’s actor.”
Born in Daegu in 1949, Ahn began his acting career as a child at just six years old in the film Twilight Train (1957). Throughout his illustrious career, he starred in iconic films such as Silmido, Radio Star, Mandala, and A Fine, Windy Day. His performance in the latter earned him the Best New Actor award at the Grand Bell Awards in 1980, often referred to as the Korean equivalent of the Oscars. His final film, Birth, was released in 2022.
Ahn’s contributions to cinema extended beyond acting; he became a cultural touchstone for many in South Korea. Although the media affectionately dubbed him “the nation’s actor,” Ahn himself expressed a preference for being regarded simply as a film actor.
Tributes have poured in following his passing, including a statement from Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who expressed his admiration on social media. He noted that Ahn “left a big footprint on Korean film history and cultural arts,” adding, “I already miss his warm smile and gentle voice.”
The Artist Company announced that Ahn’s funeral will be held on Friday at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital Funeral Hall. He is survived by his wife and two children, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations in the arts.
