Katherine Ryan has come forward with details about her experience working alongside Russell Brand during the UK version of *Roast Battle* for Paramount’s Comedy Central. During her stand-up special, *Katherine Ryan: First Born Daughter*, which premiered on March 30, 2024, the comedian disclosed that she had prepared jokes relating to Brand’s alleged treatment of women but was ultimately prohibited from delivering them by Paramount executives.

Although Ryan did not mention Brand by name during her special, she provided clear hints about his identity. Her remarks follow a joint investigation by *The Times*, *Sunday Times*, and Channel 4 into Brand’s alleged misconduct, which has drawn significant media attention. Brand has consistently denied any wrongdoing in response to these allegations.

In May 2023, Brand pleaded not guilty to charges including rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault. Recently, he faced additional charges, including one of rape and another of sexual assault. He is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 20, 2024, to address these charges. In a social media statement, Brand expressed gratitude for the opportunity to defend himself in a trial set for 2026.

During her stand-up special, Ryan reflected on her feelings when invited to be part of a panel show alongside Brand. She recounted, “I was so excited to do it, but then I found out that if I went on, I would be sat next to a man whom I firmly believe, but can’t prove to be a c***.” She added that her initial decision was to decline the offer, but ultimately chose to confront Brand and incorporate jokes about his controversial reputation, stating, “but in a fun way.”

Ryan recalled crafting two jokes aimed at Brand, neither of which made it to the final edit of *Roast Battle*, which aired in the UK in 2018. According to Ryan, Brand initially tolerated the jokes but later reacted negatively, threatening to quit the show. “The channel got upset. They didn’t want him to leave, and they issued him a new contract,” she explained. Ryan described how Brand entered her dressing room the following day, presenting the new contract and declaring, “Look, you’re not allowed to be mean to me anymore, because I don’t consent.”

As a result of Comedy Central’s intervention, Ryan felt compelled to alter her approach to the show, stating she had to “be nice” following the network’s directives. Paramount has declined to provide any comments regarding the situation. Both Ryan and Brand were approached for their perspectives but did not respond.

Brand departed from *Roast Battle* after its first season and was replaced by Jonathan Ross. The show, based on the U.S. format *Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle*, features comedians roasting each other, with judges considered fair game for humor.

Ryan has previously discussed her experiences on *Roast Battle* during an appearance on the BBC series *Louis Theroux Interviews* in 2022. Though she did not name Brand or the show at that time, her comments gained significant traction online. Reflecting on the fallout from her interview, Ryan humorously noted, “I was so excited to be interviewed by him, and I maybe shouldn’t have done that interview because I have a disorder where if you ask me a question, I will tell you the answer.”

She added, “What’s the worst that could happen if I talk to Louis Theroux about it? A *Times* exposé, a Channel 4 documentary?” Ryan highlighted the awkwardness of discussing someone who has been officially charged with an offense, stating, “it’s awkward now, because there is someone in the UK who’s been officially charged with an offense, and when that happens, you’re not allowed to slag them off anymore. Boo.”

The ongoing developments surrounding Brand’s legal issues and Ryan’s reflections on her experience continue to resonate within the entertainment industry, sparking conversations about the complexities of comedy, consent, and accountability.
