Juliette Binoche Discusses Directorial Debut and Future Projects
Juliette Binoche recently spoke about her directorial debut and upcoming projects during an appearance at the Red Sea International Film Festival. Her feature documentary, In-I In Motion, explores the intersection of dance and theatre while highlighting the collaboration with UK dancer and choreographer Akram Khan. This marks a significant milestone for Binoche, who has taken a step back from acting to pursue her passion for directing.
In an interview at the Deadline Studio, Binoche shared that her decision to create In-I In Motion was inspired by the late Robert Redford. She recalled his encouragement: “He said, ‘You’ve got to make a film out of this show.’ It just gave me a little push to find a way to make it happen.” The documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at the dance theatre production that she co-created, providing audiences with an intimate view of the creative process.
Insight into Upcoming Projects
During the festival, Binoche also discussed her forthcoming film, Queen At Sea, directed by Lance Hammer. While the plot has been largely kept under wraps, Binoche revealed some intriguing elements. She plays a woman who relocates to London with her daughter to care for her aging mother. The film delves into the complexities of Alzheimer’s disease, exploring themes of care and generational differences. “It brings up questions…and through different generations, there are three different generations,” she explained.
In addition to Queen At Sea, Binoche is working on a new project titled Merci Charlotte (Thank You Charlotte). This film centers on her relationship with a child under ten years old, whom she has adopted from Turkey. Binoche described the film as an exploration of the connections between different worlds, emphasizing the emotional depth of their bond.
Participation in Kering Women in Motion
Binoche’s presence at the Red Sea International Film Festival is further highlighted by her involvement in the Kering Women in Motion program. This year marked the first panel discussion hosted by Kering at the festival, featuring Binoche alongside Saudi filmmaker Shahad Ameen and Palestinian-American actor and filmmaker Cherien Dabis. This initiative aims to promote women’s contributions to cinema, showcasing their work and experiences in the industry.
For those interested in Binoche’s unique journey from celebrated actress to director, a video interview from the Red Sea studio offers further insights into her creative endeavors and the themes that resonate throughout her work. As she continues to forge her path in filmmaking, Binoche’s passion and dedication to storytelling remain evident, inspiring audiences around the world.
