Ethan Slater has shared insights into the intricate process of transforming into the Tin Man for the upcoming film Wicked: For Good. As he reprises his role as Boq, Slater described the extensive makeup and prosthetic routine that defined his character’s look. The actor revealed that he spent an astonishing five hours a day in the makeup chair during the film’s production, a demanding commitment that highlights the effort behind bringing this iconic character to life.

In a conversation with Parade, Slater was asked whether his metallic costume was truly made of metal. He confirmed that viewers would see his genuine expressions through the prosthetics, stating, “That’s my face moving. If I lifted an eyebrow, the eyebrow lifted. If I twitched my cheek, my cheek twitched.” This affirmation speaks to the realism achieved in Wicked: For Good, where the actor’s performance remains intact despite the elaborate costume.

The actor emphasized that the only digital effects employed were for the joints of the Tin Man. “I think a big question is how much CGI is there, and the answer is just the Tin Man joints,” Slater explained. This approach prioritizes practical effects, ensuring that much of the performance is captured live on set.

As filming progressed, the efficiency of the makeup team improved significantly. Slater noted that by the end of production, his time in the makeup chair had reduced to under three hours. He credited the skilled makeup prosthetic designers, Mark Coulier, Stephen Murphy, and Frances Hannon, for their expertise in streamlining the process.

Reflecting on his experience, Slater mentioned that he spent approximately 20 days in the full Tin Man prosthetic look, a testament to the dedication required for such a transformative role. He previously discussed these challenges on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, underscoring the physical demands of the character and the artistry involved in the makeup design.

As anticipation builds for Wicked: For Good, Slater’s revelations provide a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes efforts that contribute to the film’s magic. Fans can expect to see a performance that not only honors the beloved character but also showcases the hard work of the entire production team. The film is set for release in the coming months, promising to enchant audiences worldwide with its rich storytelling and stunning visuals.
