Dark Comedy ‘Obituary’ Returns for Thrilling Season 2 on RTÉ and Hulu

The eagerly awaited second season of the dark comedy crime drama Obituary is set to premiere on RTÉ in Ireland and Hulu in the United States. The new season continues the story of Elvira Clancy, an obituary writer with a murderous twist, portrayed by Siobhán Cullen. The recently released trailer presents a gripping glimpse into Elvira’s chaotic life, described as “Dexter meets Bad Sisters.”
In a striking scene, a blood-spattered Elvira poses for her mugshot inside a police station, questioning, “Is he alive?” The officer responds dryly, “Not remotely.” Elvira’s voiceover reveals her predicament: “I’m about to become the chief suspect in a murder case, and I didn’t even do this one.” This sets the tone for a season filled with dark humor and unexpected turns.
As Season 2 unfolds, Elvira grapples with the loss of her father while finding solace in her own violent tendencies. However, her plans are thwarted by a new, enigmatic murderer. Local detective Rose, played by Noni Stapleton, becomes suspicious of Elvira’s involvement in the crime. Determined to clear her name, Elvira takes matters into her own hands to unravel the mystery.
Adding to the show’s dynamic cast, Máiréad Tyers joins as the quirky newspaper editor Vivienne Birch. Her character introduces a competitive edge to the newsroom, challenging Elvira and her boyfriend Emerson, portrayed by Ronan Raftery. “My name’s Vivienne Birch and I believe in competition,” she asserts, emphasizing her philosophy: “We should be all killer, no filler.”
Production Insights and Distribution Success
“The first season was well received, and we expect even greater interest in the new episodes,” said an executive from APC Studios.
The series is a collaborative production between APC Studios and Irish indie Magamedia, with Ray Lawlor returning as the writer. Executive producers include APC’s Laurent Boissel and Magamedia’s Paddy Hayes. Notably, APC’s sales arm will oversee distribution for the series.
The first season of Obituary garnered significant attention, securing deals with platforms such as Netflix in the UK, AMC Networks in Spain, and Britbox in Australia. As the second season approaches its release, APC is poised to showcase the series at MIPCOM, the largest television market of the year, scheduled for next month.
Fans of dark comedies and thrilling narratives have much to look forward to as Obituary returns with new twists and an expanded cast, promising to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
