Dan Feuerriegel Discusses EJ DiMera’s Complex Feelings About Stefano

The iconic soap opera Days of Our Lives is hinting at a potential return for Stefano DiMera, a character portrayed by the late Joseph Mascolo until his passing in 2016. Stefano, known as one of the most formidable villains in soap opera history, has left a lasting impact on the DiMera family, particularly on his son, EJ DiMera. Actor Dan Feuerriegel, who plays EJ, recently shared insights into his character’s complex feelings about his father during an interview with Soaps.com.
EJ’s Connection to Stefano DiMera
Feuerriegel emphasized that the legacy of Stefano continues to resonate within the DiMera family. He stated, “Regardless of whether you talk about it or not, the legacy is there. I mean, his painting’s up on the wall in the mansion… I talk to it all the time.” This connection illustrates how deeply Stefano’s influence is woven into the fabric of EJ’s identity. According to Feuerriegel, the image of Stefano serves not only as a reminder of his father’s presence but also as a source of guidance for EJ.
He described the importance of the “DiMera legacy,” asserting that, “That’s what EJ is trying to keep alive. It is of the utmost importance, because if you think about it, if there was no Stefano, what would the DiMeras be? Nothing. They wouldn’t be the DiMeras.” This sentiment underscores the pivotal role Stefano played in shaping the family’s narrative and the weight of that legacy on EJ’s shoulders.
The Burden and Blessing of Legacy
Feuerriegel acknowledged that being the son of Stefano DiMera comes with its challenges. “But it’s a part of his life… And he so fully believes in the family legacy that it is what it is. It is DiMera.” Despite the difficulties, he indicated that EJ does not view this legacy as a burden. Instead, he recognizes its significance in shaping who he has become. Feuerriegel remarked, “It’s not a burden at all… Legacy is important.”
The actor reflected on EJ’s upbringing, noting that while it was difficult at times, those experiences contributed to his development. “Obviously, EJ talks about how hard sometimes it was growing up underneath Stefano, but it made him the man that he is today. Not very well-liked, but it’s made him the man that he is today.” This acknowledgment highlights the complexity of familial relationships and the impact of parental legacies in shaping personal identities.
As Days of Our Lives continues to explore the DiMera family’s narrative, the potential return of Stefano could enhance the drama and deepen the character dynamics. With Feuerriegel’s portrayal of EJ rooted in a profound connection to his father, the storyline promises to evoke a rich exploration of legacy, identity, and family ties.
