Austin Butler is taking an unconventional approach to prepare for his role in the upcoming film, Caught Stealing. The 34-year-old actor is portraying Hank, a former baseball player who transitions to a bartender. To authentically embody his character, Butler has concentrated on specific physical attributes, particularly focusing on glute strength.

In an interview with Men’s Health, Butler revealed that director Darren Aronofsky had a clear vision for Hank’s appearance. Butler noted that Aronofsky frequently sent him images of athletes, specifically highlighting their physiques. “I actually have a whole section of just baseball players’ asses that [Aronofsky] would send me. He was like, ‘Look how thick they are!’” Butler said.

Intensive Training Regimen

To achieve the desired look, Butler enlisted the help of celebrity trainer Beth Lewis, who crafted a rigorous training program focused on lower-body strength. His routine involved exercises such as hip thrusters, stability work with a BOSU ball, and one-arm kettlebell lifts. This intense regimen aimed to build the muscle mass required for his character while maintaining a specific athletic aesthetic.

Aronofsky’s vision also required Butler to adopt unhealthy habits to reflect Hank’s lifestyle. As part of this transformation, Butler increased his caloric intake by indulging in pizzas and beers. Initially weighing 150 pounds, Butler’s weight surged to 185 pounds over six months. He humorously noted, “I’ve got a whole section of Celine pants that I just can’t even wear anymore.”

Personal Commitment to the Role

While Butler acknowledged that alcohol was not typically part of his lifestyle, he committed to drinking for the sake of authenticity. “Drinking has never been my thing. I don’t like the way it makes me feel,” he admitted. This dedication to his role exemplifies the lengths to which actors go to convincingly portray their characters.

The film, which also stars Zoë Kravitz, Bad Bunny, and Regina King, is set to hit theaters on August 29, 2025. As Butler continues to prepare for this unique role, audiences can anticipate a performance that reflects both physical transformation and a deep dive into the life of a character shaped by past athletic glory and current struggles.
