89X Returns to Airwaves, Reviving Detroit-Windsor Alt-Rock Scene

The iconic alternative rock station 89X has made its return to the airwaves after a five-year hiatus, officially relaunching on the morning of August 28, 2023. The Windsor-based station, previously known as CIMX-FM (88.7), has transitioned back from a country music format, which it adopted in 2020. The new format debuted at 8:08 a.m. with the track “Stop!” by Jane’s Addiction, echoing the station’s original launch in May 1991.
Reviving a Cultural Staple
Now branded as “Windsor’s Alternative,” 89X has returned with a refreshed logo and a renewed commitment to its roots in the Detroit-Windsor music scene. Before this significant switch, the station concluded its Pure Country 89 era with a tribute to Johnny Cash, playing four of his songs, ending with “The Man Comes Around.” The transition has been met with enthusiasm from the local community.
According to Brad Gibbs, the program director, the excitement surrounding the relaunch had been building for about a week. “It felt like we had the ear of the city this morning. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re just so excited to have this brand back. It feels like a full circle moment,” Gibbs stated.
A Strong Fanbase and Future Goals
Over its nearly three-decade history, 89X cultivated a loyal following on both sides of the border, hosting popular annual concert events in Detroit, such as the Night 89X Stole Christmas and the 89X Birthday Bash. The station’s return is being heralded as “the relaunch of a movement,” aiming to reconnect with its dedicated listeners.
The station announced its comeback on social media, posting, “Windsor’s Alternative is back. Did you miss us? Because we missed YOU!” This message resonated with fans who had speculated about the station’s re-emergence. Comments flooded in on social media platforms, with one listener expressing, “Jane’s Addiction never sounded so good at 8 a.m.” Another fan added, “Welcome back, 89X! You’ll be my (No.) 1 preset on my car stereo.”
The revival of 89X not only signifies a return to its musical roots but also highlights the enduring appeal of alternative rock in the region. As the station steps back into the spotlight, it aims to reignite the passion for music that has long been a hallmark of the Detroit-Windsor area.
