Yonkers Council Approves MGM Empire Casino License Proposal
The Yonkers Community Advisory Council has voted unanimously to support a full casino license proposal for MGM Empire City. This decision positions Yonkers closer to securing one of the three coveted downstate casino licenses, with a final determination expected from a state commission in December 2023. Notably, this marks the first affirmative vote from a Community Advisory Council for a casino proposal in downstate New York, following the rejection of three proposals in Manhattan.
MGM Empire City has been operational since 2006, offering video slots and gaming. The recent vote by the Community Advisory Council indicates that the addition of table games may soon be a reality. MGM has expressed readiness to begin construction shortly after obtaining the necessary license. The plan includes the introduction of 183 live dealer games, along with 14 new restaurants and bars, and a 5,000-seat venue for concerts and other events.
The proposed casino is projected to generate over $50 million annually for Yonkers in tax revenue and other financial benefits. Additionally, MGM has committed to establishing a fund aimed at supporting small businesses in the nearby area. According to casino expert Alan Woinski, the success of Empire City is already notable, stating, “They’ve brought in more without table games than most casinos in Las Vegas do. The fact that they’re so successful already means they deserve it.” Woinski also highlighted that Empire City is likely to face less opposition compared to a new facility due to its established presence.
As the Yonkers Community Advisory Council moves forward, another council in Queens is also expected to vote in favor of a casino license for Resorts World New York City. Furthermore, a separate proposal to build a casino across from Citi Field is under consideration, with that vote anticipated on Monday.
The developments in Yonkers and Queens signal a significant shift in the landscape for casino operations in New York, illustrating a growing acceptance of gaming establishments in urban areas. As the state prepares to make pivotal decisions regarding casino licensing, the outcomes will undoubtedly shape the economic future of these communities.
