U.S. Stock Markets Reach New Heights on October 3

U.S. stock markets experienced a notable uptick on October 3, 2023, with most major indexes climbing to record levels. The S&P 500 edged up by less than 0.1 percent, marking its seventh winning week out of the last nine. The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a more substantial increase, rising by 0.5 percent, both contributing to their all-time highs achieved just the day before. In contrast, the Nasdaq composite slipped by 0.3 percent after initially gaining.

Treasury yields in the bond market increased following a mix of reports regarding growth within U.S. services businesses. Additionally, crude oil prices experienced a rebound, recovering some of the significant losses incurred earlier in the week.

Market Performance Overview

On Friday, the S&P 500 gained 0.44 points, closing at 6,715.79. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 238.56 points to finish at 46,758.28. The Nasdaq composite, however, fell by 63.54 points, settling at 22,780.51. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks smaller companies, was more optimistic, rising by 17.69 points to close at 2,476.18.

For the week, the S&P 500 recorded an increase of 72.09 points, equivalent to 1.1 percent. The Dow gained 510.99 points, also 1.1 percent, while the Nasdaq increased by 296.44 points, or 1.3 percent. The Russell 2000 index rose 41.86 points, translating to 1.7 percent.

Year-to-Date Performance

Looking at the year-to-date figures, the S&P 500 is up by 834.16 points, representing a gain of 14.2 percent. The Dow has increased by 4,214.06 points, or 9.9 percent. The Nasdaq has shown the most significant growth, up by 3,469.71 points, a remarkable 18 percent increase. The Russell 2000 index has risen by 246.02 points, reflecting an 11 percent gain.
