Southwest Airlines Partners with Austin to Create 2,000 Jobs
Southwest Airlines has reached a significant agreement with the City of Austin that promises to create more than 2,000 jobs over the next five years. Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Austin Mayor Kirk Watson announced this development during a press conference on Friday, following the Austin City Council’s approval of the deal on Thursday.
Under the terms of the agreement, Austin will provide Southwest Airlines with an incentive of $2,750 for each new hire based in the city. This initiative is set to enhance the airline’s operations at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, where Southwest already accounts for more than 40 percent of passenger traffic.
The addition of these roles is expected to bring an average salary of $180,000 for the new positions, contributing significantly to the local economy. In total, this partnership could generate close to $20 million in local tax revenue. The incentive program will last for five years, with a maximum payout to Southwest Airlines of $5.5 million.
Mayor Watson emphasized the broader implications of the deal, stating, “We’re building lives and careers at the same time we’re building tarmacs and terminals.” He highlighted that Southwest’s decision to expand in Austin reflects the city’s strong workforce and promising future. The partnership aims to benefit not only the airline but also local workers, families, and tourists visiting the city.
In addition to creating jobs, the agreement will support local workforce initiatives, including the Austin Infrastructure Academy. This academy is designed to equip residents with the skills needed for the evolving job market in the region, further enhancing the community’s economic prospects.
Officials believe that this collaboration will greatly improve the passenger experience at the airport while reinforcing Southwest’s commitment to the Austin area. With this substantial investment in local talent and infrastructure, the partnership signifies a pivotal step for both the airline and the city’s economic development.
As the agreement unfolds, the City of Austin demonstrates its commitment to fostering an environment conducive to business growth, while also prioritizing the welfare of its residents.
