Residents Demand Action as Woodland Lakes Resort Roads Deteriorate

Residents of Woodland Lakes Resort in Midway, Georgia, are expressing significant frustration over the deteriorating conditions of the community’s roads. They warn that the current state poses potential life-threatening challenges, particularly regarding emergency access. The issue has persisted for years, with local residents witnessing a slow decline in their neighborhood’s infrastructure.
Linda Hammock and Dell Johnson highlighted the difficulties of navigating the dirt roads, which are riddled with deep holes and mud patches. Hammock shared her experience, stating, “That red truck out there, I got stuck that deep. It sunk the other night, and I’m like, okay, this is just ridiculous. I told someone to come get me out.” Such conditions not only create inconveniences but also raise serious safety concerns, particularly in emergencies. Johnson noted that delivery trucks often become trapped, requiring heavy-duty vehicles for retrieval. “If there is a fire, ambulances, this and that, I think that is a priority,” he emphasized.
The residents have consistently reached out to both Liberty County and the Property Owner Association (POA) for repairs but report that little has been done. According to the POA, over 240 members are currently behind on dues, resulting in an estimated $300,000 deficit in the budget allocated for road maintenance and community upkeep. Johnson remarked, “Some of them are not paying their dues because they don’t respect the place. Without that respect and trust, it’s gone.”
In response to the challenges, the POA has taken steps to improve financial management. They have engaged an accountant to ensure transparency and accountability in their finances and have retained a licensed attorney to enforce mandatory assessments as outlined in their Bylaws. The board also plans to collaborate with county officials for road evaluations, aiming to address the ongoing issues.
Hammock expressed her desire for transparency regarding the road repairs, stating, “I want to see what you have had done. Don’t just tell me. I want to see.” Meanwhile, WSAV has attempted to contact Liberty County multiple times for comments on the condition of the county-owned roads within the community, but no statement has been received.
As frustration grows among residents, the urgency for action becomes increasingly clear. The condition of the roads at Woodland Lakes Resort not only affects daily life but also significantly impacts the safety of its residents. Without prompt intervention, the situation may escalate, leading to more severe consequences for the community.
