Penn State University has announced the termination of head football coach James Franklin after a challenging 12-season tenure. The decision, made public on Sunday, comes as the Nittany Lions struggle to regain their footing in the competitive landscape of college football. Franklin is set to receive over $49 million due to the terms of his contract.

In light of Franklin’s departure, associate head coach Terry Smith will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. This leadership change follows a disappointing performance from the team, which recently suffered a defeat against UCLA, a team that had yet to secure a win this season and had not held a lead in any of their previous games.

The situation worsened for Penn State when the Nittany Lions returned home to Happy Valley and faced Northwestern. The team lost this game 22-21, marking their second consecutive home defeat and their third overall loss of the season. A stunned crowd witnessed the team struggle, particularly as they committed six penalties for 71 yards in the first half alone. Adding to the woes, quarterback Drew Allar suffered a season-ending injury in the fourth quarter.

Franklin’s coaching record against top-10 teams has drawn scrutiny. Following the loss to Oregon earlier this season, Franklin’s record against AP top-10 opponents stands at 4-21, with just one victory against Big Ten teams ranked in the top 10. According to ESPN Research, his 0.160 winning percentage against these high-caliber teams is one of the lowest in college football history for coaches with a minimum of 25 games at a single institution since the poll era began in 1936.

Following the announcement, Patrick Kraft, vice president for intercollegiate athletics, expressed gratitude towards Franklin for his contributions but noted the university’s commitment to maintaining high standards in its athletics programs. Kraft stated, “We believe this is the right moment for new leadership at the helm of our football program to advance us toward Big Ten and national championships.”

With Franklin’s departure, Penn State embarks on a new chapter, aiming for improvement and renewed success in the remainder of the season and beyond. The Nittany Lions will look to Smith to navigate the challenges ahead and restore the team’s competitive edge in college football.
