Mets Secure Jorge Polanco with Two-Year, $40 Million Contract
The New York Mets have reached an agreement with infielder Jorge Polanco on a two-year contract worth $40 million, as reported by ESPN on Saturday. This move comes as the team navigates a challenging offseason following the departures of key players Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso during free agency. The deal is pending a physical examination and does not include any opt-out clauses or deferred money.
Polanco, who is 32 years old and boasts 12 years of Major League experience, initially sought a three-year contract but settled for the two-year deal, which offers a high annual average value. The infielder is expected to primarily fill the first base position, taking over Alonso’s role, and will also serve as a designated hitter. His versatility provides the Mets with additional infield options.
A former shortstop with the Minnesota Twins, Polanco transitioned to primarily second base and designated hitter during his last two seasons with the Seattle Mariners. Notably, he has yet to play an inning at first base in the major leagues. Despite a decline in his defensive metrics—he recorded a minus-4 Outs Above Average last season—he remains a formidable presence at the plate, hitting .265 with 26 home runs and an .821 OPS in 138 games last season.
Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has emphasized the importance of strengthening the team’s defense after a disappointing 2025 season. His strategy has already included trading Brandon Nimmo, a beloved homegrown player, in exchange for Marcus Semien, an elite second baseman. This week, Stearns allowed Alonso, another fan favorite but less effective defender, to sign a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles without making a counteroffer.
The Mets are counting on Polanco’s background as a former middle infielder to facilitate his transition to first base. His offensive capabilities are backed by a solid career average of .263, with double-digit home runs in each of the last six full seasons. Other candidates for the first base and designated hitter roles include Jeff McNeil and Mark Vientos. However, McNeil’s availability for trade could alter the team’s plans as Stearns continues to reshape a roster that underperformed last season.
As the offseason progresses, the Mets are expected to remain active in the free agent market, seeking further improvements to enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming season. The addition of Polanco represents a significant step for the franchise as it aims to rebound from recent setbacks.
