Eureka Council Halts Proposal to Rename Snug Alley for Historical Context

A proposal to rename Snug Alley in Eureka, California, to Flatmo Alley has been withdrawn after new historical insights emerged regarding the alley’s original name. The initiative was led by Councilmember Kati Moulton, who sought to honor local artist Duane Flatmo. However, recent research revealed that the alley likely references a historic bar known as “the Snug.”

During an Open Space, Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, Moulton revealed that her initial understanding was flawed. She had believed the alley’s name simply described its narrow dimensions. To clarify the history, she consulted local historian Steve Lazar, who uncovered evidence of the Snug Saloon, a bar that operated in the area during the early 1900s. Newspaper clippings and images showcased the saloon’s vibrant past, including a photograph from July 5, 1947, depicting patrons inside.

After reviewing the historical materials, Moulton requested to withdraw the renaming proposal. She acknowledged that honoring Flatmo is still a priority and expressed her intention to find a more suitable location for the tribute. Moulton stated, “We want to ensure that we’re adding something rather than taking something away.” She aims to identify a site in a culturally significant area that reflects Flatmo’s contributions to public art in Eureka, including his iconic kinetic sculptures and large-scale murals.

The Snug Saloon, which was part of Eureka’s lively bar scene, is now the site of a children’s clothing store named Otto + Olive. City records indicate that Snug Alley was formally named in 1977, along with other alleys in the Old Town district. Lazar’s findings confirmed the bar’s presence during the peak of Old Town’s nightlife, which was characterized by both bars and brothels.

While there was no vote on the proposal during the meeting, commissioners expressed interest in honoring Flatmo. Moulton emphasized that the initiative would be revisited in the public process, indicating a commitment to ensure that any recognition of Flatmo would be in a manner that respects the historical context of the area.
