West Ranch Teacher Inspires Students with New Storybook Adventure

A teacher at West Ranch High School has transformed a chance encounter with a mouse into a heartwarming children’s book titled The Adventures of Seymour of West Ranch. This engaging story not only captivates young readers but also reflects the personal journey of its author, Adam Holland, who drew inspiration from both his classroom experiences and his battle with brain cancer.
Holland, who has been teaching at West Ranch for nearly 20 years, introduced the character of Seymour after a small mouse visited his history class two years ago. The unexpected guest sparked a lively discussion among students, who suggested naming the critter. “They were like, ‘Can we name it?’” Holland recalled in a recent interview. The name Seymour stuck, and the little mouse soon became the protagonist of a story that holds deeper meaning.
The journey toward writing this book began when Holland faced his cancer diagnosis. Throughout his treatment, he documented inspiring quotes that helped him navigate the challenges he encountered. He wondered if sharing his experiences could positively impact others. This led to the publication of two previous works focused on faith, titled Anchored in the Storm: Pursuing Christ in the Midst of Life’s Trials and Anchored to the Son: Pursuing Christ when the Storm Calms.
In creating The Adventures of Seymour of West Ranch, Holland aimed to honor the community he cherishes. The book features characters inspired by real individuals from his life, including Ms. Penelope, a character influenced by birds that have visited his classroom, and The Crew, a tribute to former students who have passed away. Holland described his intent as one of memorializing those who made an impact on his life and the school community.
“It was definitely to memorialize them and give them a place,” he explained. “Most of those students that have passed away were students that had an impact on me.” Through these characters, Holland emphasizes the importance of relationships and support during difficult times.
Holland’s creative process included collaborating with local artist Sam Irizarry, who illustrated Seymour and brought him to life visually. Irizarry’s hand-drawn illustrations, converted to digital art, add a personal touch that enhances the story. The illustrations depict Seymour engaging in various activities, such as playing football and celebrating holidays, which resonate with young audiences.
Writing the book was not without its challenges. Holland balanced his health concerns with the responsibility of educating his students. Despite the hurdles, he infused his heart and soul into the narrative, making it a personal reflection of his experiences. “It was a personal story,” he said.
Looking to the future, Holland has contemplated the possibility of a sequel but has yet to solidify any plans. For now, he hopes that readers will glean valuable life lessons from Seymour’s adventures, showcasing the unique spirit of West Ranch High School.
“I’m incredibly grateful for those past years. Some easy years, and difficult years, many normal and all are a blessing to me,” Holland expressed. He encourages students to embrace the journey of life and the connections made along the way.
Through Seymour’s whimsical adventures, Adam Holland not only entertains but also shares profound lessons about friendship, resilience, and the impact of community—a message that resonates with readers of all ages.
