Costco Offers Weight-Loss Drugs at Half Price to Members

Costco has reached an agreement with drugmaker Novo Nordisk to provide members access to anti-obesity medications, particularly Ozempic and Wegovy, at approximately half the typical price. Starting immediately, members with a valid prescription can purchase a four-week supply of these injectable drugs for $499. This offer is exclusively available to those paying out of pocket, as many insurance plans still do not cover these treatments.

The decision to sell these GLP-1 medications comes amid rising prices and limited supply in the market. This scarcity has driven some consumers to seek out cheaper, compounded alternatives, prompting discussions about the need for stricter federal regulation of these products. “We want to make sure we offer the real, authentic Wegovy and Ozempic where patients seek care,” stated David Moore, the US president of Novo Nordisk, in an interview with NBC News.

Understanding GLP-1 Medications

Both Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide, an injectable medication designed to manage type 2 diabetes and facilitate weight loss. Semaglutide functions by imitating a natural hormone known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which plays a crucial role in regulating appetite and insulin production. By diminishing feelings of hunger, these medications can lead to significant weight loss, making them attractive options for many individuals.

Public awareness of semaglutide has surged in recent months. A survey conducted in August 2023 revealed that over 80% of Americans had at least some familiarity with the drug, with approximately one-third having either tried it or expressed interest in doing so. According to Novo Nordisk, more than 200,000 Wegovy prescriptions are filled each week in the United States, reflecting the growing demand for these treatments.

Market Dynamics and Future Implications

Despite the strong demand for GLP-1 medications, Novo Nordisk faces intense competition from pharmacies and clinics offering lower-cost, copycat formulations. As of August 2025, nearly 12% of Americans have used GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, with the use being particularly notable among women aged 50 to 64, where about one-fifth have reported using these medications.

Costco’s entry into the GLP-1 market is expected to enhance access to these weight-loss options for its members. This move could further increase demand, especially given the ongoing challenges many face in obtaining insurance coverage for these medications.
