The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is commemorating the 35th anniversary of its Out of the Closet thrift store chain with a special one-day sale and community celebrations. The original store, located in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, opened its doors in 1990 and has since become a vital resource for affordable clothing and household items, while also providing free HIV testing services.

Marking a Milestone in Community Support

Since its inception, Out of the Closet has built a reputation for offering budget-friendly options while supporting public health initiatives. The store chain has expanded to include 25 locations across nine states, all of which contribute to raising awareness and reducing stigma around HIV/AIDS.

“Today marks 35 years of awesome thrifts and dedicated service to our community,” the organization stated in a social media post. “For more than three decades, we’ve provided free HIV testing from trained clinicians in a casual, stigma-free environment.” This commitment to service has not only enhanced the shopping experience but has also played a crucial role in public health education.

The Atwater Village location, being the original store, holds special significance. It has been a staple in the community, providing both affordable goods and essential health services. The anniversary celebration on October 4, 2023, is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. and will feature a 35% off sale until 14:00, with the store remaining open until 19:00.

Community Engagement and Celebrations

Visitors to the Atwater Village store can enjoy the anniversary festivities, which will include a DJ and complimentary food trucks. The event aims to attract both loyal customers and new shoppers, fostering a sense of community while celebrating the store’s rich history.

Financially, 96 cents of every dollar earned at Out of the Closet stores supports vital HIV/AIDS education, awareness, and prevention programs. These efforts have made a significant impact in the communities served, highlighting the importance of combining retail with public health initiatives.

As the AIDS Healthcare Foundation celebrates this important milestone, it invites the community to join in the festivities at the Atwater Village location. The anniversary sale not only offers great deals but also underscores the mission of Out of the Closet as a community-focused organization committed to improving public health.

For those in the area, the anniversary event presents a unique opportunity to shop, celebrate, and support a cause that has positively affected countless lives over the past three decades.
