Researchers Highlight Rising Costs of E-Scooter Injuries in Ireland

Research presented at the European Emergency Medicine Congress has revealed alarming financial implications of e-scooter injuries in Ireland. According to findings shared by Thomas Suttie, a senior house officer in emergency medicine at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, these injuries cost hospitals an average of $2,024 USD (€1,726) per patient. The total annual expenditure for treating e-scooter injuries at Suttie’s hospital alone reached $150,867 USD (€128,650) in 2023.
In recent years, the popularity of e-scooters has surged, particularly in urban areas. This trend has unfortunately coincided with a rising number of injuries. Suttie’s research indicated that visits to the emergency department due to e-scooter accidents have more than tripled since previous reports in 2021. The situation underscores a growing public health concern as more individuals sustain serious injuries that demand extensive medical intervention.
Injury Statistics and Hospital Impact
In the past year, 76 patients suffering from e-scooter injuries were treated at Connolly Hospital. Most cases involved musculoskeletal injuries, often requiring complex surgeries. Suttie noted that these injuries frequently place a significant burden on orthopedic departments, with 13 patients needing hospital admission for orthopedic care and an additional 34 patients requiring outpatient follow-up.
The research team collected comprehensive data on the costs associated with emergency room visits, acute care admissions, radiology services, and surgical procedures. Suttie emphasized that while the majority of head injuries did not necessitate intensive care, the frequency of serious head traumas is on the rise. Alarmingly, only about 8% of e-scooter riders in a related study wore helmets, leaving many vulnerable to concussions and other head injuries that could have been mitigated through protective gear.
Financial Implications for Healthcare Systems
The financial impact of e-scooter injuries extends beyond Connolly Hospital, as researchers believe the findings can be applied to other hospitals across Ireland. Suttie cautioned that Dublin’s city center hospitals likely experience even higher costs due to the greater volume of e-scooter traffic and related incidents.
In the context of Ireland’s public healthcare system, where hospitals absorb medical costs directly, e-scooter injuries further strain resources. In contrast, patients in the United States typically face out-of-pocket expenses or insurance billing, complicating the financial landscape for those injured. A recent study from Denver, Colorado, indicated that hospital charges for e-scooter injuries can escalate to nearly $23,000, with median costs reaching $4,871 for daytime accidents.
Suttie advocates for enhanced public health policies to address the rising number of e-scooter injuries. He suggests that implementing mandatory helmet laws and enforcing stricter e-scooter regulations could significantly reduce the frequency and severity of injuries, thereby lowering costs for riders and alleviating pressure on healthcare systems.
As cities worldwide grapple with the challenges posed by micromobility solutions, the findings from this research serve as a critical reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures and regulatory frameworks.
