Local, state, and federal officials gathered on September 26, 2023, in Sartell, Minnesota, to announce the arrival of Niron Magnetics, which plans to construct a 190,000-square-foot facility on land previously owned by the Verso Paper Mill. This development is set to be completed by 2027 and will focus on producing rare-earth-free permanent magnets. These magnets will have applications in various industries, including automotive, electronics, and renewable energy, and are produced using advanced chemical processes that combine iron and nitrogen.

The event drew significant bipartisan support, with notable attendees including Rep. Tom Emmer, the U.S. House Majority Whip, and Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota. Other key figures included Rep. Betty McCollum and a video message from Senator Amy Klobuchar. McCollum emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in Minnesota, stating, “When it comes to projects in Minnesota, we do this in a non-partisan way.”

Jonathan Rowntree, CEO of Niron Magnetics, highlighted the significance of this venture, thanking both Emmer and McCollum for their support. He noted that the project aims to enhance U.S. supply chain independence and reduce reliance on foreign sources, particularly China. “I specifically want to thank both the House Majority Whip, Rep. Tom Emmer, and Rep. Betty McCollum, for their steadfast support and willingness to take a risk on a new technology,” Rowntree said.

Despite the positive atmosphere, some light-hearted jabs were exchanged between Emmer and Walz during their speeches. Emmer referenced an earlier comment made by Walz in 2017, asserting, “It just makes me think, contrary to what some people might say, we have a lot more to offer out here than just rocks and cows.” In response, Walz invited Emmer to experience the innovations coming from the University of Minnesota, where the technology for Niron Magnetics originated.

The governor also acknowledged the role of federal partners in the project. He highlighted the $2 million grant awarded by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development to support the city’s development efforts. Among those present were Minnesota state legislators Rep. Tim O’Driscoll, Rep. Bernie Perryman, and Rep. Lisa Demuth, although they did not address the audience directly.

After the event, Perryman spoke to St. Cloud LIVE, emphasizing the regional benefits of the project. “If something really goes good here, it affects all of us, because the lines are so thin between our areas,” she noted.

The gathering also saw increased security measures, with law enforcement present and snipers positioned in elevated areas. These precautions were in response to recent incidents of political violence, including the tragic shootings of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, as well as the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah.

The announcement of Niron Magnetics’ facility marks a significant step forward for Sartell and reflects a commitment to fostering innovation and economic growth in the region.
