Bobby Petrino Appointed Interim Head Coach for Arkansas Football

Arkansas has appointed Bobby Petrino as interim head coach of its football program following the dismissal of Sam Pittman. The announcement was made on September 27, 2023, after the team suffered a significant defeat, losing 56-13 against Notre Dame. Petrino, who previously led the Razorbacks from 2008 to 2011, is stepping into the role as the university begins a national search for a permanent head coach.
Given his prior success, Petrino’s appointment brings a sense of familiarity and experience to the program. Hunter Yurachek, the athletics director, confirmed that Petrino will be considered in the search for a full-time replacement, stating, “We will begin a national search right away, and that process will include Coach Petrino, who has expressed his desire to be considered for the full-time job.”
Coaching History and Impact at Arkansas
Petrino’s history with the Razorbacks is noteworthy. During his first tenure, he achieved a record of 34-17, highlighted by back-to-back seasons with ten wins. Under his leadership, Arkansas made appearances in the 2011 Sugar Bowl and 2012 Cotton Bowl, reaching as high as No. 3 in the national rankings and finishing fifth in the final AP poll in 2011. His teams were characterized by a potent offense, with quarterback Ryan Mallett setting school records for passing touchdowns.
Petrino’s initial stint ended in controversy in 2012 when a motorcycle accident revealed an extramarital affair. He was subsequently fired for cause, with the then-athletics director, Jeff Long, citing a “pattern of misleading and manipulative behavior.” Despite this, Petrino’s offensive acumen has remained respected in the football community.
Recent Developments and Future Prospects
In 2023, Petrino returned to Arkansas as the offensive coordinator. His impact has been immediate, with the team recording 5,973 total yards in the 2024 season, ranking as the fourth-highest in school history. The offense also excelled in rushing touchdowns with 34, passing yards with 3,571, and averaging 274.7 passing yards per game.
Petrino’s broader coaching career includes tenures at Louisville, where he posted a record of 41-9, and Missouri State, among other positions. His overall head coaching record stands at 137-71, reflecting a successful career that includes multiple bowl game appearances and consistent offensive production.
As Petrino takes the reins for the remainder of the 2025 season, he faces the challenge of rejuvenating the Razorbacks following a series of disappointing performances. No additional candidates for the head coach position have been announced as of September 28, 2023. Petrino’s performance in the coming weeks will be critical in determining his future with the program.
