Chinese Scientists Develop ‘Bone Glue’ That Heals Fractures in Minutes

A team of scientists in China has created a groundbreaking adhesive known as “Bone-02,” capable of healing fractures in just three minutes with a single injection. This innovative solution aims to revolutionize the treatment of orthopedic injuries, which typically require extensive recovery periods and invasive surgical procedures, including metal plate insertions.

Rapid Healing with Minimal Intervention

According to a report by the Global Times, the development of Bone-02 addresses a significant challenge in orthopedic medicine. Traditional healing methods for fractures can take months and often necessitate surgeries that involve complex procedures. Lin Xianfeng, associate chief orthopedic surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou, highlighted the efficiency of the adhesive, stating that it achieves precise fixation even in blood-rich environments.

In one notable trial, a patient suffering from a wrist fracture received an injection of Bone-02 through a small 3 cm incision. Remarkably, the fracture healed completely in just three minutes, as reported by Cho Sun Daily. This quick recovery contrasts sharply with conventional surgical methods that involve metal plates and screws, which necessitate a second surgery for removal.

Inspired by Nature’s Adhesives

The research team drew inspiration from oysters, specifically their unique ability to adhere to challenging underwater surfaces. The bio-glue produced by oysters forms strong, pressure-resistant bonds even in moist and dynamic environments. This characteristic is pivotal for the functionality of Bone-02, which reportedly demonstrates a maximum bonding force of over 400 pounds.

The creators of Bone-02 also noted that the substance is designed to be naturally absorbed by the body as the bone heals. This feature eliminates the need for follow-up surgeries to remove implants, significantly reducing patient recovery time and complications. Initial tests indicate that the use of bone glue may lead to fewer infections compared to traditional metal plate procedures.

Overall, the introduction of Bone-02 represents a significant advancement in orthopedic treatment, promising to enhance patient outcomes and reduce the burden of recovery associated with traditional methods. As this innovative technology progresses, it could change the landscape of fracture management and surgical interventions worldwide.
