Wellness Devices Now Covered by Your HSA: What You Need to Know
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are increasingly being recognized for their potential to cover a variety of wellness technology beyond traditional medical expenses. According to Chris Byrd, senior vice president at WEX, a global commerce platform that administers these accounts, many employees now view their benefits as tools for everyday health management rather than merely emergency funds.
In recent research, several wellness devices emerged as surprising contenders for HSA and FSA coverage. These items, while beneficial for health and well-being, may sometimes require documentation of medical necessity for reimbursement.
Wellness Devices Eligible for HSA and FSA Coverage
The following wellness products can be purchased using HSA or FSA funds, although it is essential to check eligibility requirements with HSA providers.
1. **Massage Guns**: Devices like Therabody’s Theragun are eligible for HSA and FSA purchases. Prices start at approximately $200. The brand Caring Mill also offers two pack options, including a heated massage gun.
2. **Oura Ring**: The popular Oura Ring, known for its sleep tracking capabilities, is now eligible for HSA and FSA. Users can pay directly with their account card or submit for reimbursement later.
3. **Whoop Wearable**: The Whoop 4.0 and the recently reviewed Whoop 5.0, which tracks health metrics and sleep quality, are also covered. Purchasing through HSA or FSA includes accessories such as a 12-month membership and a waterproof charger.
4. **Smart Blood Pressure Monitors**: Devices such as Garmin’s Index BPM Smart Blood Pressure Monitor, priced at $200, and the more economical OMRON Evolv Wireless Monitor at $76, can be purchased via HSA or FSA accounts.
5. **Chest Strap Heart Rate Monitors**: The Garmin HRM-Pro Plus is recognized for its battery life and compatibility with various devices and is eligible for HSA and FSA coverage. A more affordable alternative, the Garmin Heart Rate Monitor 200, is available for less than $100.
6. **Light Therapy Devices**: Red light therapy LED masks and panels, such as those from Dr. Dennis Gross and reVive, may also qualify for coverage under HSAs or FSAs, depending on medical necessity.
7. **Compression Boots**: The Therabody JetBoots, designed to alleviate muscle soreness and enhance recovery, are priced between $600 and $1,200 and may be eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement.
Understanding HSA and FSA Eligibility
Byrd emphasizes the importance of understanding the fine print related to HSA and FSA eligibility. Generally, items must be used for the treatment of a medical condition to qualify. For example, while devices like the Theragun may be eligible under certain medical circumstances, a doctor’s note, known as a letter of medical necessity, is typically required.
To confirm eligibility, individuals should consult their HSA provider’s online portal or mobile app.
The distinction between HSAs and FSAs is crucial for users. An HSA is individually owned and remains with the account holder even if they switch employers. In contrast, an FSA is linked to an employer and often has a “use-it-or-lose-it” policy at the end of the plan year. Additionally, contributions to HSAs can be invested, allowing funds to grow tax-free over time, which is not an option for FSAs.
As wellness technology continues to evolve, employees are encouraged to explore their benefits fully, understanding how to leverage these accounts for a broader range of health and wellness expenses.
