Rabid Raccoon Detected in Walterboro, South Carolina

A raccoon in Walterboro, South Carolina, has tested positive for rabies, marking the first confirmed case of the virus in an animal in Colleton County for the year 2025. The South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) confirmed that one individual was exposed to the animal and has since received medical attention.

The raccoon was tested on September 23, 2025, and the results indicating rabies were received the following day. According to Terri McCollister, director of the Rabies Program at SCDPH, it is crucial to maintain a safe distance from wild and stray animals to minimize the risk of rabies.

Understanding Rabies Exposure

Exposure to rabies is defined as direct contact with saliva or brain or nervous system tissue from an infected animal, which can occur through broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth. In South Carolina, there have been a total of 74 confirmed cases of rabid animals in 2025 so far. This is a significant public health concern, as rabies can be fatal if not treated promptly.

McCollister emphasized the importance of contacting a trained professional, such as a local animal control officer or wildlife rehabilitator, if an individual encounters a wild animal that appears to be in distress. “If you see an animal in need, avoid touching it,” she advised, underlining the potential dangers involved.

In the previous year, South Carolina recorded 81 confirmed cases of rabies, with one of those cases occurring in Colleton County. The consistent presence of rabies in the region highlights the ongoing risk posed by wildlife and the need for public awareness and education on how to respond to potential encounters with rabid animals.

As health authorities continue to monitor the situation, residents of Colleton County and surrounding areas are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their pets from rabies exposure.
