Lady Cougars Dominate Hanover Area with Impressive 6-1 Victory
In a commanding display of skill, the Hazleton Area Lady Cougars triumphed over Hanover Area with a decisive score of 6-1 in a Wyoming Valley Conference girls’ soccer match on October 3, 2023. The star of the show was Izzy Ciavarella, who netted a remarkable hat trick, contributing significantly to her team’s success.
Ciavarella’s performance included three goals, showcasing her striking ability and positioning on the field. Teammates Ryleigh Snyder and Jayla Thomas also played pivotal roles, each adding a goal and an assist. The Lady Cougars’ offensive prowess was further complemented by Althea Ulanoski, who accounted for the final goal of the match.
The game saw Hazleton Area dominate possession and create numerous scoring opportunities. They registered 20 shots on goal compared to Hanover’s 8, reflecting their offensive control throughout the match.
In other local high school soccer action, the Wyoming Valley West boys’ team defeated Hazleton Area 3-0. Luke Ginochetti was instrumental for the Spartans, contributing one goal and two assists. Goals from Noah Fetko and Chase Evanofski rounded out the scoring for Wyoming Valley West, who managed to keep a clean sheet thanks to goalkeeper Grayson Ader, who recorded two saves.
Other Highlights from the Local Sports Scene
At Nesbit Stadium, Wyoming Seminary cruised to a resounding 6-0 victory over MMI Prep, led by a stunning four-goal performance from Artur Zelenko. He was supported by Caleb Smeraldi, who added two goals of his own. The Preppers faced the challenge without their captain, Adam Frask, who is sidelined with a season-ending injury.
In an overtime thriller, Pittston Area edged Crestwood 4-3, with Sadiki Murindabangado netting two goals. The victory was hard-fought, highlighting the competitive spirit of the Wyoming Valley Conference.
Meanwhile, Blue Mountain secured a convincing 5-0 win against Tamaqua, with Andrew Wascho scoring twice. The Eagles quickly established a commanding lead, making it difficult for Tamaqua to recover.
In girls’ volleyball, Berwick swept MMI Prep 3-0, with standout performances from Zoey Force and Makayla Brown, who contributed significantly in service points and aces. The Lady Panthers of Panther Valley also maintained their unbeaten streak, defeating Mahanoy Area with a similar 3-0 scoreline.
Minersville turned in a strong performance against Weatherly, winning 3-1 thanks to a solid team effort. Abby Weston led the Lady Wreckers with impressive stats, including 15 assists.
In junior high field hockey, Hazleton Area overwhelmed Nanticoke 6-1, featuring a standout performance from Jacelyn Pena, who scored four goals. Teammates Delilah Boyle and Shelsy Encaration Reyes added one goal each, demonstrating the depth and talent of the Lady Cougars’ squad.
As the season progresses, local teams continue to showcase their skills and determination, setting the stage for exciting matchups ahead.
