New Gaming Hub The Kraken’s Crate Opens in Newton, Iowa

A new community space for gamers, known as The Kraken’s Crate, has officially opened its doors in Newton, Iowa. Located at 309 W. Fourth St. N., next to the Mahaska Communications Group office, this innovative venue aims to foster connections among gamers of all ages. Owners Cody Soehnlen and Jess Stewart launched the store to replicate the welcoming atmosphere they discovered in a game store in the Des Moines area.
The inspiration for The Kraken’s Crate came during a challenging time for the couple, who relocated from Ohio to Iowa amidst pandemic restrictions. Once those restrictions eased, they visited local game stores and realized the need for a friendly gathering place. In an interview, Stewart expressed their vision: “We really want people to feel that this space is just as much their’s as it is our’s. Our priority is creating connections and community.”
Equipped with an extensive collection of board games, role-playing game materials, and trading card game packs, The Kraken’s Crate has the resources gamers need. The store features a wall of games, figurine paint, and ample table space for both two-player and group gaming sessions. Soehnlen and Stewart hope to create an engaging environment where gamers can meet friends and explore new games.
Community and Connection at the Core
This venture is more than just a business for the couple; it is a passion project. Soehnlen continues his work as a mechanic, while Stewart is employed at Grinnell College. They plan to manage their finances carefully, hoping to break even or create community connections without prioritizing profit. “If someone meets their friends here or their core group here and five years down the road they decide to do this in Grinnell, that would be awesome,” said Soehnlen.
The Kraken’s Crate welcomes all ages and encourages families and friends to enjoy their space. Although they are considering collaborations with Gezellig Brewing Co. for adult gaming nights, the store does not sell alcohol. Instead, it offers snacks and encourages pizza orders from Murph & Mary’s. “Our No. 1 priority is making sure it’s an inclusive space that anyone can access,” Stewart noted.
Gaming Culture and Personal Stories
Soehnlen’s journey into the world of gaming began in 2013, when he first started playing Dungeons & Dragons. His enthusiasm for the game led to a desire to include others, including his wife. After attending a local gaming venue, they met a group of friends that deepened their connection to the gaming community. Both owners emphasized that games like Dungeons & Dragons offer an engaging escape from daily life, allowing players to craft their own experiences.
The couple chose the name The Kraken’s Crate for its fantastical implications. Soehnlen, a fan of the mythical creature, originally envisioned a mobile gaming crate using Japanese mini-trucks. However, practical considerations led them to establish a brick-and-mortar store instead. The shop focuses on popular trading card games, currently prioritizing Disney Lorcana and Magic: The Gathering, with plans to include the Pokémon Trading Card Game soon.
The couple actively engaged the community before opening, gathering input on desired products and events. Regular gaming nights and themed events will be held to maintain customer interaction and excitement. Early signs of interest have been promising, with potential customers already peering through the windows during renovations.
Soehnlen and Stewart expressed gratitude for the community support they have received as first-time business owners. “I’m excited to just be able to share it with people and to see if they’re as passionate about it as we are,” Stewart said. With The Kraken’s Crate now open, the couple looks forward to seeing their vision flourish and fostering a vibrant gaming community in Newton.
