Nvidia Plans $100 Billion Investment in OpenAI’s AI Infrastructure

Nvidia has announced a significant investment of up to $100 billion in OpenAI, aimed at enhancing the AI infrastructure necessary to train and deploy the next generation of models, including those designed to achieve superintelligence. This partnership will enable OpenAI to construct and operate at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centres utilizing Nvidia’s advanced systems, which include millions of graphics processing units (GPUs).

The initial deployment of Nvidia’s systems is scheduled for the second half of 2026 on the company’s Vera Rubin platform. Both companies will collaborate as preferred strategic partners, focusing on optimizing their hardware, software, and infrastructure roadmaps. This cooperation will complement existing partnerships with other leading technology firms, aimed at advancing AI infrastructure on a global scale.

Analyst Jack Gold commented on the partnership, noting that it is not surprising, given that OpenAI is one of Nvidia’s largest customers. Most of OpenAI’s models currently operate on Nvidia’s GPUs. Gold also mentioned that both companies are part of a consortium involved in the Stargate AI project, which was revealed earlier this year.

“What’s interesting is that there is no real mention of timeframes and overall costs for the 10GW system,” Gold remarked. He expressed skepticism, suggesting that this might resemble other projects that started with significant announcements but lacked detailed follow-through.

For Nvidia, this investment may not represent a major financial outlay, as the company expects to sell tens of thousands to millions of GPUs to OpenAI. Yet, the question of where OpenAI will secure funding for its ambitious infrastructure expansion remains unanswered. Gold pointed out that despite generating limited revenues compared to its substantial investments, OpenAI has consistently managed to secure necessary funding.

“OpenAI must keep building out bigger and better AI data centres for their larger models,” Gold explained. Much of their focus will be on the high-performance GPUs manufactured by Nvidia. For Nvidia, maintaining a prominent position in OpenAI’s expansion means a continuous demand for its GPUs, which also benefits the company’s marketing strategy.

In a related move, Nvidia recently invested $5 billion in Intel, further solidifying its position in the technology market. As both companies move forward with their partnership, the implications for the future of AI infrastructure remain significant, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing evolution of artificial intelligence.
