Psychologist Claims President Trump Shows Signs of Dementia

A psychologist has publicly stated that he believes President Donald Trump exhibits symptoms of dementia. In an interview on The Daily Beast Podcast, Dr. John Gartner, a former professor at Johns Hopkins University, detailed his observations regarding Trump’s cognitive decline and behavioral changes.
Dr. Gartner noted a significant deterioration in Trump’s language abilities, motor skills, and impulse control. He described how assessments of dementia involve comparing current functioning to an individual’s previous baseline. According to Gartner, Trump was once known for his articulate speech and sophisticated vocabulary. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that Donald Trump used to be a very articulate person,” he stated, highlighting a stark contrast to Trump’s current communication style.
The psychologist pointed out that Trump’s vocabulary has diminished and that he often struggles to complete thoughts or sentences. He cited an example where Trump diverted into an unrelated tangent about the film “Silence of the Lambs” while discussing immigration, illustrating the president’s disjointed thinking. Gartner remarked, “He was lying and saying that they’re sending all these immigrants from insane asylums… Well, Silence of the Lambs is a movie about insane asylums.”
In addition to linguistic concerns, Gartner characterized Trump as a malignant narcissist, complicating the situation further. “We have in a sense the worst of both worlds,” he explained, citing Trump’s historical impulsiveness and dishonesty, which may now be exacerbated by cognitive decline. “His judgment was always bad, he was always impulsive, he was always a liar, but now he really is losing his ability to think clearly.”
Gartner also highlighted a decline in Trump’s psychomotor performance. He referenced discussions with dementia specialists who suggested that the president may show signs of frontotemporal dementia, a condition linked to specific motor symptoms. “One of the dementia experts that I’ve consulted with is convinced he has frontotemporal dementia because of this symptom alone, which is called a wide-based gait,” Gartner elaborated, describing how Trump occasionally swings his right leg in an abnormal manner.
Further concerns have been raised regarding Trump’s health, including his diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency and observations of a “droopy face” during a memorial event on September 11. Gartner indicated that these symptoms might suggest underlying health issues, potentially relating to cognitive deterioration. “That’s not something that comes with age. It really is suggestive of some kind of potential mini stroke,” he stated, adding that the circulatory problems could either be linked to cognitive decline or simply coexist with it.
The implications of such observations are significant, raising questions about Trump’s capacity to fulfill his duties as president. As these discussions gain traction, the intersection of mental health and leadership continues to be a critical area of scrutiny. The ongoing analysis of Trump’s condition by professionals like Dr. Gartner provides a lens through which the public can examine the complexities of cognitive health in political figures.
