Pottstown Police Increase Enforcement on E-Bikes and Scooters

Pottstown police are intensifying their enforcement efforts regarding the use of scooters, e-bikes, and other micro-mobility devices. This initiative follows a noticeable rise in accidents involving these vehicles, prompting the borough to take action aimed at ensuring public safety.
Increased Risk and Safety Concerns
Borough Manager Justin Keller announced the heightened enforcement earlier this month, acknowledging the growing prevalence of micro-mobility options in the area. “We’ve all seen that there is more prevalent use of e-bikes and scooters in the borough,” he stated. “With rising costs, more people are turning to these transportation methods.”
Keller highlighted that while many residents support the use of these devices, compliance with traffic laws is essential. The police department has documented a significant increase in injuries related to accidents involving micro-mobility devices. In many cases, the operator of the motor vehicle involved was not at fault.
“Recently, the police department has recorded a marked increase in accidents that have caused injuries to riders,” Keller noted. “In most of these cases, the person operating the motor vehicle was not at fault, but rather the person operating the micro-mobility device was at fault for not following traffic laws.”
New Enforcement Measures
Common violations include riding in the wrong direction, ignoring stop signs, and failing to obey traffic signals. Such actions create dangerous situations not only for riders but for all road users.
In response to these challenges, Keller announced that for the next few months, the Pottstown Police Department will be stepping up enforcement. Those violating traffic laws can expect to receive warnings or moving violations. “If you are using this type of mobility device, please understand you must follow the vehicle code or you will be cited,” Keller said.
To assist riders in understanding the regulations, the police department has posted reminders on their social media platforms. According to state law, electric scooters cannot be legally ridden on public roads and may only be used on private property.
For electric and non-electric bicycles, riders are required to adhere to all traffic laws, similar to motor vehicle operators. Violations such as running stop signs, ignoring red lights, and riding against traffic can result in citations.
Ensuring compliance with these laws is vital for the safety of drivers, riders, and pedestrians alike. The Pottstown Police Department continues to advocate for responsible use of micro-mobility devices to foster a safer community.
