InterDigital Appoints Julia C. Mattis as Chief Licensing Officer

InterDigital, Inc. has announced the appointment of Julia C. Mattis as its new Chief Licensing Officer. She will report directly to Liren Chen, the company’s President and CEO. Mattis, who has been with InterDigital since 2010, previously held several senior roles, including Chief Licensing Counsel and Head of Smartphone Licensing. Most recently, she served as Interim Chief Licensing Officer.

In her tenure, Mattis has overseen licensing agreements valued at more than $4 billion since 2021, demonstrating a significant impact on the company’s growth and revenue generation. Chen praised her capabilities, stating, “Licensing allows us to re-invest in our research, drive the development of global standards such as 5G, and deliver more shareholder value, and Julia is perfectly placed to lead our licensing programs into a new era.”

Strengthening Licensing Strategies

Mattis expressed enthusiasm about her new role, emphasizing the company’s strong licensing presence that covers over 80% of the smartphone market. She pointed to recent growth in sectors such as consumer electronics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and video services, areas that are set to expand further under her leadership.

Her background includes legal practice in Richmond and Philadelphia, where she developed expertise that will be instrumental in navigating the rapidly evolving licensing landscape. Mattis holds a Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Richmond School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from James Madison University.

As InterDigital continues to innovate and expand its licensing capabilities, Mattis’s appointment is seen as a pivotal move in positioning the company for future growth and competitive advantage in the technology sector.
