William LeCates Appointed President and CEO of MVHS

The Board of Directors of Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) has appointed William W. LeCates, MD as the new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective October 20, 2025. He succeeds Darlene Stromstad, FACHE, who is retiring after nearly seven years of leadership at MVHS.
After Stromstad announced her retirement, the Board conducted a national search for her successor. Following extensive interviews with numerous qualified candidates, Dr. LeCates was chosen to lead the health system. His appointment reflects a strategic decision to continue MVHS’s mission under experienced leadership.
For the past 14 months, Dr. LeCates has served as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at MVHS. In this role, he managed Clinical Support Services, Operational Support Services, and supervised the health system’s various product lines. He also collaborated closely with departments focused on quality and medical education. Alongside his administrative responsibilities, Dr. LeCates has maintained a limited clinical practice specializing in internal medicine and nephrology.
Dr. LeCates expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I am honored to take on this leadership position at MVHS. Our focus will remain on providing high-quality healthcare services to the communities we serve.” His appointment signals a commitment to continuity and excellence in patient care as the organization navigates the complexities of the healthcare sector.
Stromstad’s tenure at MVHS was marked by significant advancements in services and community outreach. Her leadership not only strengthened the health system’s operational capabilities but also enhanced its reputation as a leader in healthcare delivery. The Board of Directors acknowledged her contributions during her time at the helm, noting that she played a crucial role in driving organizational growth and innovation.
As Dr. LeCates transitions into his new position, he will inherit a team dedicated to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of the community. His experience as COO provides a solid foundation for his leadership, as he aims to build on the successes of his predecessor while addressing new challenges in the healthcare landscape.
The MVHS community looks forward to this new chapter under Dr. LeCates’s leadership, with hopes for continued progress and improved healthcare services for all.
