Julia Ann Chlanda, Esteemed Community Figure, Dies at 68

Julia Ann Chlanda, a cherished member of the Torrance community in California, passed away on August 25, 2025, at the age of 68. A lifelong resident of the city, Julia was known for her dedication to public service and her deep commitment to her family and community.

Born and raised in Torrance, Julia graduated from Torrance High School in 1975. She furthered her education by earning a bachelor’s degree in history from Loyola Marymount University in 1979. Following her academic achievements, she dedicated an impressive 37 years of her career to serving as a Deputy Clerk for the California Court of Appeal in Los Angeles. Her work was marked by a strong sense of duty and integrity.

Community Involvement and Passions

Julia was actively involved in the Torrance First United Methodist Church, where she participated in various roles throughout her life. In her youth, she engaged with the church’s youth group and choir, later giving back by teaching Sunday School.

A lover of the performing arts, music, film, and literature, Julia shared her passions with those around her, enriching the lives of many. She was also an avid animal lover, reflecting her nurturing spirit. Above all, Julia was a devoted mother, raising her two children in the South Bay. She was their unwavering supporter, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams and passions, which became the foundation of their lives.

Legacy and Family

Julia is survived by her daughter, Samantha Chlanda, of Los Angeles, and her son, Ryan Cody Chlanda, of Torrance. She is also remembered by her siblings: Patricia Champlin Castillon (Frank) of Murrieta, Melissa Malone of Culver City, Michele Pulliam, and John Chlanda (Teri) of Washington. Additional family members include her uncle, Milton “Pat” Wood, aunt, Dorothy “Dot” Peterson, nephew, Jordan Champlin, stepmother, Jo Ann Weldon, and numerous cousins.

Julia was also supported in her later years by her partner, Kinji Inomata. She was preceded in death by her parents, Betty Champlin and Chauncey Champlin, as well as her father, Ted Chlanda.

Julia Ann Chlanda will be remembered for her kindness, dedication to her community, and the deep love she held for her family. Services to honor her life will be held at 15:00 on September 27, 2025, at the Torrance First United Methodist Church.
