New Mexico Triumphs Over UCLA, Handing Bruins Third Straight Loss

In a significant upset, the University of New Mexico defeated UCLA 35-10 on Friday night in Pasadena, California, marking the Lobos’ first victory over a Big Ten opponent. Damon Bankston was pivotal in the win, rushing for 154 yards and scoring a touchdown, while also catching a 43-yard touchdown pass. The Lobos improved their record to 2-1, while the Bruins fell to 0-3.
Jack Layne contributed with 152 passing yards and two touchdowns. He connected with tight end Simon Mapa for an 8-yard touchdown, helping to put New Mexico ahead early. The Lobos’ performance was particularly impressive given they entered the game as 15.5-point underdogs, according to ESPN.
Strong Ground Game Leads to Victory
New Mexico showcased a dominant rushing attack, amassing 298 yards on 46 carries. This offensive strategy proved effective against a Bruins defense that struggled throughout the game. After attempting trick plays early on, the Lobos shifted to their ground game, leading to a 1-yard touchdown run by Scottre Humphrey late in the first quarter.
Nico Iamaleava, the Bruins’ quarterback, completed 22 of 34 passes for 217 yards and one touchdown. Despite his efforts, UCLA’s performance was hampered by 13 penalties totaling 116 yards, disrupting their rhythm on both offense and defense.
Following a slow start, UCLA managed to score with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Iamaleava to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala, narrowing New Mexico’s lead to 14-7. After a 51-yard field goal from Mateen Bhaghani in the third quarter, the Bruins pulled within 14-10. However, the Lobos responded decisively.
Turning Point in the Second Half
New Mexico executed a punishing 13-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in Bankston’s 2-yard touchdown run, extending their lead to 21-10. This drive not only showcased the Lobos’ resilience but also demonstrated their ability to control the game in critical moments.
This victory marks a historic moment for New Mexico, as it is their first win against a power conference opponent since defeating a then-Pac-10 member, Arizona, on September 13, 2008. First-year head coach Jason Eck has established a promising foundation for the Lobos, evident in their performance against UCLA.
The defeat leaves UCLA in search of answers as they continue their season. The Bruins will need to regroup quickly to avoid further setbacks as they seek their first win of the year.
