Albertin Montoya Steps Down as Head Coach of Bay FC, New Role Ahead
Albertin Montoya has announced his resignation as head coach of Bay FC, effective at the end of the current season. This decision comes as the club struggles with performance, having not won a match since June 7 and currently on a four-game losing streak. Montoya revealed that he intends to remain with the club in a different capacity, although the specific details of his new role have yet to be finalized.
Montoya’s resignation raised questions due to the timing, with only seven games remaining in the season. The team, which has not earned a point since August 10, finds itself 12th out of 14 teams in the league standings with just 17 points. Despite the disappointing season, Montoya expressed optimism about the future direction of the club.
In a press conference held at CEFCU Stadium in San Jose, California, on September 9, 2025, Montoya explained that the decision was part of a broader strategy for the organization. “We’re always getting together and talking about what’s best for the organization,” he stated. “If we do this now, it gets us everything in place for a new coach, it gives us a little bit more time.”
Transitioning to a New Vision
Montoya has emphasized the importance of establishing a solid foundation for Bay FC’s future. He noted that discussions regarding his resignation began a few weeks prior, indicating a planned transition rather than a reaction to recent performance. “It was something that we were looking at,” he explained. “The project has always been for the first couple years, let’s get started.”
Originally brought on as a consultant during Bay FC’s coaching search, Montoya emerged as the final choice for the head coach position. Reflecting on his tenure, he expressed pride in the achievements made, including the team’s playoff berth in 2024. Montoya’s experience predominantly lies in youth development, a focus he plans to return to in his new role.
“I was so proud and happy that I was able to do that,” he said. “Now, it’s moving forward. What’s going to give us the best opportunity and success moving forward?”
Montoya’s new responsibilities are expected to involve identifying and developing talent, a shift back to his strengths before joining Bay FC. He and his wife, Erin, previously helped transform the Mountain View Los Altos Soccer Club into a prominent force in youth soccer, contributing to the development of players who now compete in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Players Respond
The club’s players were informed of Montoya’s decision, with team captain Rachel Hill expressing surprise yet understanding of the situation. “You can never predict that,” Hill remarked. “As a team, we’re behind the head coach. We get the news, and that’s just the way that this industry goes, unfortunately.”
Hill acknowledged the weight of Montoya’s departure but remains hopeful about the team’s prospects for the remainder of the season. “It was the club’s decision, and that’s what they thought was best for the organization,” she stated. “We believe in that.”
Bay FC’s schedule includes critical matches against formidable opponents such as Orlando, Gotham, Utah, and others, all of whom are currently playoff contenders. With only a month left in the season, the team is determined to make a push for the playoffs, despite being nine points away from the final spot.
As Bay FC prepares for their next match against Orlando, Montoya’s legacy as head coach will remain a topic of discussion among fans and analysts alike. His commitment to the club’s future and the players’ readiness to adapt to changes will be pivotal as the team navigates the final stretch of the season.
