El Paso Community College Joins NJCAAE for Esports Initiative

El Paso Community College (EPCC) is set to launch its esports program as part of a growing trend among educational institutions. Aligning with the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE), which includes over 200 colleges, EPCC aims to foster competitive gaming as a new avenue for student engagement and success. The initiative encompasses a wide variety of games, including popular titles such as Halo, League of Legends, and Madden 24, catering to a diverse group of aspiring digital athletes.
Dr. William Serrata, President of EPCC, emphasized the college’s commitment to enhancing student potential through various opportunities. “Everything we do is to enhance the potential of our students,” he stated. The introduction of esports is viewed not merely as a recreational activity but as a significant opportunity for students to excel academically, personally, and professionally.
The move to establish an esports program was largely driven by student interest, with the Student Government Association advocating for its development. The Board of Trustees, led by Chair Judge Brian Haggerty, supported the initiative. Haggerty remarked, “Our decision to support esports reflects that same commitment,” highlighting the board’s dedication to fostering student success in both academic and athletic domains.
Upcoming Tournaments and Team Development
EPCC plans to host tournaments this fall, marking the official launch of its esports program. The college’s esports team, known as the Tejanos, will be coached by Adan Lara, an adjunct Biology Professor and Kinesiology Lab Supervisor with extensive experience in gaming and esports. Lara aims not only to cultivate a competitive team but also to establish a sustainable program within the college.
“For me, esports has always been more than just competition—it’s about passion, teamwork, and opportunity,” Lara articulated regarding his vision for the team. He intends to strategically recruit players and expand the team’s presence, positioning EPCC at the forefront of community college esports on a national scale.
As the esports landscape continues to evolve, EPCC’s initiative illustrates a commitment to innovation in education. By embracing this digital frontier, the college aims to offer students a platform that enriches their college experience and prepares them for future challenges in a rapidly changing job market.
