A dog owner’s unexpected relief turned into a viral sensation when he returned home from work to find his German shepherd puppy, Maverick, had not caused the mayhem he feared. Brian Baker, 35, and his partner, Shayla Baker, 33, live in Haslet, Texas, and had left their 7-month-old puppy loose in the house during their absence.

In a TikTok video that has since amassed over 1.2 million views, Brian documented his anxious arrival home. As he entered the house, he was greeted by a surprisingly calm Maverick and only a few minor disturbances, including misplaced feathers and shampoo bottles. The video featured a text overlay that read, “When you’re on your way home from work and realize you don’t remember putting the dog in the cage before you left the house.”

“I realized while driving home from work that I hadn’t put him up that morning,” Baker explained to Newsweek. He typically takes responsibility for securing Maverick in his crate but had forgotten to do so that day. Anticipating a chaotic scene, he decided to film the moment, thinking that if his house was indeed in ruins, others might find humor in the situation.

To his surprise, the household was intact, with Maverick behaving remarkably well. Baker noted, “Honestly, I expected to find something much worse—he’s made bigger messes in far less time.” The calming demeanor of the puppy left viewers both amused and impressed, turning what could have been a disaster into a lighthearted moment.

The clip sparked a wave of reactions, with some viewers critiquing the use of a crate while others shared their own experiences of similar panic. One commenter wrote, “I have two mals and a shepherd; if I forget to cage them, I won’t have a house to come home to,” while another added, “I couldn’t imagine leaving my male Frenchie out alone all day. He’s BAD.”

Many dog owners resonated with the experience, especially those familiar with the mischievous nature of German shepherds. Baker acknowledged this connection, stating, “Many German shepherd owners totally understood, knowing how mischievous the breed can be.” He also addressed the criticism regarding crate training, emphasizing that it is a common and safe practice for working families like theirs.

This situation is not unique, as social media has seen various pet owners share their experiences of forgetting to secure their pets. In a similar vein, one pet owner revealed a surprise when they found their cat had snuck into the dog’s crate while they were away.
