Maine Pediatric Dentist Calls for Urgent Increase in Anesthesia Reimbursement

In a pressing call for action, pediatric dentist Mike Dowling of Yarmouth has highlighted the urgent need for increased reimbursement rates for anesthesia under MaineCare. During a recent visit to his office in Portland on August 14, 2025, Dowling revealed that children requiring general anesthesia for dental procedures face a staggering wait time of up to one year.
According to Dowling, the long delays are placing vulnerable children in distressing situations. “There are kids right now who are living with a mouth full of abscessed teeth,” he stated. The current reimbursement rates for anesthesiology are insufficient, leading to a backlog that can leave children without timely care.
MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program, is tasked with providing essential healthcare services, including dental care for children from low-income families. Dowling emphasized that an increase in reimbursement could significantly reduce wait times, allowing more children to receive the dental care they desperately need.
The issue has garnered attention from various stakeholders, including parents, health advocates, and policymakers, all of whom are urging the Department of Health and Human Services to take immediate action. With the potential to enhance the health outcomes of many young patients, the call for increased funding is seen as a critical step in addressing the dental care crisis in Maine.
As discussions continue, it remains essential for state officials to recognize the urgency of this situation. Many children in the state are suffering from untreated dental issues, which can lead to more severe health complications over time. By prioritizing the adjustment of reimbursement rates, Maine can ensure that its youngest residents receive the necessary care without undue delay.
The ongoing conversation surrounding healthcare funding in Maine reflects a broader challenge faced by Medicaid programs across the country. As healthcare costs rise, the need for adequate funding and support for essential services becomes increasingly vital.
In summary, the situation calls for a prompt response from the Department of Health and Human Services to improve access to dental care for Maine’s children. By addressing the reimbursement issues, the state can make substantial strides in safeguarding the oral health of its youngest citizens.
