Empower Yolo Welcomes Celina Alveraz as New Executive Director

The board of directors at Empower Yolo has appointed Celina Alveraz as the organization’s new executive director, effective September 1, 2023. This transition marks a significant leadership change for the nonprofit, which serves individuals and families affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crises in Yolo County. The board expressed confidence in Alveraz’s ability to guide the organization through future challenges.
In a press release, the board emphasized Alveraz’s extensive experience and strong connections within the community. Cathy Farman, chair of the board, stated, “With Alveraz’s proven leadership and deep roots in the community, we are confident Empower Yolo will continue to grow and thrive in this new chapter.” The selection process involved collaboration among board members, staff, and community partners, reinforcing the board’s trust in Alveraz’s capability to uphold the organization’s mission.
Alveraz brings over 20 years of dedicated service in various roles at Empower Yolo, including her recent position as associate director. Her work has focused on supporting survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking. “I feel deeply honored and humbled to step into this role,” Alveraz remarked. “Empower Yolo has been an anchor of hope, safety, and empowerment in our community for 48 years.”
The organization has been recognized for its efforts, recently being named the 2025 Nonprofit of the Year for Assembly District 4 by Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry. Empower Yolo provides critical services such as crisis intervention, emergency shelter, and legal assistance. The shelter, located at 175 Walnut St., was recently renamed the Starkweather Family Shelter in honor of the Starkweather family’s generosity.
Alveraz’s journey with Empower Yolo began as a crisis line volunteer after completing a 72-hour Peer Counselor Certification. Over the years, she has held various roles, including Sexual Assault Services Coordinator and Director of Crisis Support Services. Her leadership follows that of Lynnette Irlmeier and Bill Irlmeier, both of whom retired on August 29, 2023, after 15 years of service. Alveraz expressed gratitude for their mentorship, stating, “They modeled leadership rooted in compassion, integrity, and vision.”
The board and staff are enthusiastic about Alveraz’s appointment. Many believe her extensive experience will facilitate a smooth transition for the organization and its clients. Alveraz affirmed her commitment to enhancing Empower Yolo’s services while ensuring long-term sustainability. “My priorities are to strengthen and expand our services, ensure long-term sustainability, and center the voices of the people we serve in everything we do,” she explained.
Looking ahead, Alveraz plans to prioritize staff wellness and professional development. “When we take care of our team, we are best able to care for the community,” she noted. Additionally, she aims to deepen community partnerships and increase awareness of Empower Yolo’s resources across Yolo County.
Alveraz expressed her gratitude to Empower Yolo’s network of donors, volunteers, and community partners, acknowledging their vital role in the organization’s work. “Empower Yolo has always been more than an agency; it’s a community movement for safety, justice, and empowerment,” she said. As the organization approaches its 50th anniversary, Alveraz is focused on both celebrating its legacy and adapting to future challenges.
“Approaching our 50th anniversary is both a celebration and an invitation to reflect on who we are and where we’re going,” she stated. “We will continue to honor our history while embracing new ways of addressing issues like domestic violence, sexual assault, housing insecurity, and economic justice.”
With Alveraz at the helm, Empower Yolo is well-positioned to strengthen its impact on the community. The board and staff are optimistic that her leadership will foster a more resilient future for the organization and those it serves.
