Disney+ and Hulu Launch Companion Video Podcasts for Fans

Disney+ and Hulu are enhancing the viewing experience for fans by introducing a series of companion video podcasts for popular shows. This initiative aims to provide audiences with in-depth insights, including recaps and behind-the-scenes information, allowing viewers to connect with their favorite series on a deeper level.
The first podcast in this new slate, titled “‘Only Murders in the Building’ Official Podcast,” is set to launch alongside the premiere of the show’s fifth season on September 9, 2023. Each new episode will be released weekly to coincide with the show’s schedule, offering fans a timely companion to their viewing experience. The podcast will be hosted and executive produced by Michael Cyril Creighton, who portrays Howard Morris in the series.
Creighton will engage with a range of guests, including the show’s showrunner and executive producer John Hoffman, as well as notable stars such as Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Christoph Waltz, Jane Lynch, and Keegan-Michael Key. This lineup promises an engaging exploration of the show’s themes, production processes, and character development.
Shannon Ryan, President of Direct-to-Consumer & Disney Entertainment Television Marketing, emphasized the intention behind this initiative. “We built this slate of companion video podcasts to give our fans even more ways to connect more deeply with the shows they love,” she stated. “These are like a backstage pass for their favorite series, and we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to expand their viewing experience, go behind the scenes with our creators and casts, and continue the conversation beyond each episode in an engaging and entertaining new way.”
In addition to being available on Disney+ and Hulu, podcast episodes will also be accessible on YouTube and distributed through audio platforms in collaboration with ABC News Audio. This multifaceted approach aims to reach a broader audience while enhancing the overall engagement with the content.
The podcast initiative will also feature other popular Disney shows, including “Dancing with the Stars,” “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” and “Murdaugh: Death in the Family.” Ahead of the upcoming season of “Dancing with the Stars,” judge Derek Hough expressed gratitude towards the show’s fans. “Big shout-out to all the fans who’ve been watching for so long, because without you truly,” he remarked. “Shows are getting let go and canceled left, right, and center. We’re going strong. And, it’s because of the fans who have been tuning in every single year for 20 years. So, thank you guys.”
This venture into companion podcasts reflects a growing trend in the entertainment industry, where streaming platforms seek to enrich viewer engagement through innovative content formats. By providing fans with additional context and commentary, Disney+ and Hulu are not only enhancing their offerings but also fostering a stronger sense of community among viewers. As the television landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like these may become essential in retaining audience loyalty and satisfaction.
