Telecommunications Worker Rescued After Night on Soper Mountain

A telecommunications worker was rescued on March 15, 2024, after spending a night stranded on Soper Mountain in Piscataquis County, Maine. The worker, identified as Chad Wilcox, 51, from Woodstock Valley, Connecticut, became separated from his colleagues while hiking to service communications equipment.
According to Mark Latti, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Wilcox was trapped on a ledge with a steep drop. He was hiking with two coworkers when he lost his footing and ended up in a precarious position. Maine Game Wardens reached him on Thursday night but were unable to carry out a rescue due to the challenging terrain.
The following morning, members of the Maine Association of Search and Rescue (MASAR) arrived on the scene. Trained in high-angle rope rescue techniques, they successfully lowered Wilcox nearly 200 feet to safety. After the rescue operation, wardens transported him off the mountain using all-terrain vehicles.
Remarkably, Wilcox was uninjured and did not require any medical attention following the incident. The quick response from both the Maine Game Wardens and MASAR highlights the importance of professional rescue teams in remote and rugged terrains.
Soper Mountain, located in northwest Piscataquis County, attracts hikers and outdoor enthusiasts but poses risks due to its steep cliffs and challenging paths. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for caution while exploring such areas, particularly when hiking alone or without proper equipment.
