AFJ Hummingbird Gala to Honor Jason Henzell and Joe Bogdanovich

On October 10, 2025, the prestigious Plaza Hotel in New York City will host the annual Hummingbird Gala, organized by the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ). This much-anticipated event will celebrate the philanthropic contributions of two distinguished individuals: Jason Henzell and Joseph “Joe” Bogdanovich. The gala aims to unite philanthropic leaders, supporters, and members of the Jamaican diaspora for an evening of cultural significance and charitable impact.
This year, Henzell will receive the International Humanitarian Award for his extensive advocacy in Jamaica’s South Coast. As the Chairman of Jakes Hotel, Villas and Spa, he has been instrumental in various initiatives that focus on sustainable tourism, youth engagement, and public health. Henzell co-founded the Treasure Beach Foundation (BREDS), which has played a crucial role in community recovery efforts, particularly following Hurricane Beryl. His commitment to education is evident in his role as Chairman of Newell High School and the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) South Coast Chapter.
Bogdanovich will be honored with the International Achievement Award for his significant contributions to Jamaica’s music and cultural landscape. As the driving force behind Reggae Sumfest, he has amplified Jamaica’s cultural presence on a global stage. Through the DownSound Records Foundation, he invests in educational and youth programs, thereby nurturing the next generation of creative talent in Jamaica.
Caron Chung, Executive Director of AFJ, stated, “These honorees embody AFJ’s mission of uplifting communities through education, health care, and economic opportunity. Their vision and unwavering commitment to transformation align perfectly with our goal of creating lasting, positive change in Jamaica.”
The gala promises more than just an awards ceremony. Attendees can look forward to an engaging cocktail reception, a curated silent auction, and a gourmet three-course dinner prior to the formal award presentations. The evening will also feature vibrant entertainment, including a live performance from Agent Sasco and a special showcase by the Alpha Music Students. A celebratory afterparty with Max Glazer will encapsulate the spirit of Jamaican culture.
Funds raised during the Hummingbird Gala will support AFJ’s grant-making initiatives across Jamaica, addressing critical needs in education, healthcare, and economic development. For over four decades, AFJ has acted as a vital philanthropic bridge, mobilizing resources to address systemic challenges and empower grassroots organizations. The annual grant cycle directly impacts communities across the island, with funds distributed each spring to programs that promote long-term growth.
The Plaza Hotel, known for its elegance, will serve as a fitting backdrop for this celebration of Jamaica’s resilience and cultural richness. Guests can expect a night filled with recognition and entertainment, along with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to Jamaica’s future.
As AFJ continues to pursue its mission, events like the Hummingbird Gala highlight the importance of global partnerships in tackling challenges while celebrating progress. By honoring leaders such as Henzell and Bogdanovich, the gala underscores the vital role of visionaries who connect culture, community, and philanthropy. Their work not only reflects Jamaica’s global influence but also showcases the enduring spirit of its people in inspiring positive change.
For ticket and sponsorship information, interested attendees can visit AFJ’s official website. Each contribution helps sustain a legacy of service, ensuring that Jamaica’s communities thrive for generations to come.
