Penn State Welcomes Joe Nastasi as Honorary Captain for FIU Clash

Penn State University has announced that former wide receiver Joe Nastasi will serve as the honorary captain for the upcoming game against Florida International University (FIU) on October 7, 2023. This marks the second consecutive week that a notable letterman has been chosen for this role, following former NFL safety Adrian Amos who held the title during the game against Nevada.
Nastasi, who played under the legendary coach Joe Paterno from 1995 to 1998, earned varsity letters during his time with the Nittany Lions. He contributed to three nine-win seasons and was part of the team that achieved an impressive 11-2 record in the 1996 season. Throughout his college career, Nastasi participated in four bowl games, helping the team secure a 3-1 record in those matchups.
As a player, Nastasi appeared in 43 games, finishing with 45 receptions for 741 yards and seven touchdowns. He is perhaps best remembered for his pivotal role in a memorable upset against then-No. 13 Michigan. In a snowy Beaver Stadium in 1995, Nastasi scored on a fake field goal, a moment that has become a cherished memory for Penn State fans.
Currently, Nastasi serves as the wide receivers coach at State College High School, where he continues to influence young athletes. His connection to Penn State remains strong, as his son, Donte, is a walk-on cornerback on the university’s roster for 2025.
During the game against FIU, Nastasi will join the team captains for the coin toss. His presence is expected to energize the crowd, likely leading a “We are” chant at some point during the game, a popular rallying cry among Penn State supporters.
The matchup against FIU will kick off at 12:00 PM and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. Fans are eager to see how the Nittany Lions perform in front of a home crowd, with a former player like Nastasi representing their proud football tradition.
