Sinner Powers into US Open Semi-Finals After Dominating Musetti

World No 1 Jannik Sinner showcased an impressive performance at the US Open, advancing to the semi-finals after defeating fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. The defending champion triumphed with a score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on September 6, 2023, marking his fifth consecutive Grand Slam semi-final appearance.
Sinner’s victory not only highlighted his skill but also extended his hardcourt winning streak to an impressive 26 matches. A win against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the upcoming semi-final would propel him into his fourth major final this year.
Dominance on Display
Throughout the match, Sinner displayed remarkable consistency and control. He has maintained a flawless record against his countrymen at the tour level, now standing at 16-0, including three victories against Musetti. Following the match, Sinner reflected on their rivalry, stating, “We know each other very well… it’s nice to play here. Obviously, playing Davis Cup together, we have to take the friendship away for the match.”
The match lasted just over two hours, with Sinner starting strong and maintaining his lead throughout. His performance was characterized by powerful serves and precise shots, demonstrating why he is currently the top seed in the tournament.
Auger-Aliassime’s Resurgence
In the other semi-final, Felix Auger-Aliassime fought through a challenging match against Alex De Minaur, ultimately securing his spot with a hard-fought victory. The match extended over four hours and concluded with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4), allowing Auger-Aliassime to reach his second US Open semi-final.
Despite battling injuries and fluctuating confidence since a breakthrough performance in New York four years ago, Auger-Aliassime demonstrated resilience and skill, serving 22 aces and delivering 51 winners. He acknowledged the nerves he felt during the match, saying, “It wasn’t pretty at all times… I was willing to dig really deep.”
De Minaur, who was aiming to reach the last four at a Grand Slam for the first time, expressed frustration over missed opportunities. After leading by a set and a break, he struggled to maintain his momentum. Reflecting on the match, he noted, “Right now I’m looking at this like a wasted opportunity… you don’t get these chances often.”
With Sinner and Auger-Aliassime set to clash in the semi-finals, the upcoming match promises to be a thrilling encounter, especially considering their recent history where Sinner defeated Auger-Aliassime in Cincinnati, winning by a decisive margin.
As the tournament progresses, fans eagerly anticipate the high-stakes showdown on September 8, 2023, at the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium. The outcome could significantly impact both players’ careers as they aim for the prestigious title at this year’s US Open.
