Camp Abilities Empowers Visually Impaired Athletes in New Jersey
A remarkable initiative, **Camp Abilities**, recently concluded its annual program at **Kean University** in **Toms River, New Jersey**, aimed at supporting children who are blind or visually impaired. The camp provides a unique opportunity for these young athletes to showcase their skills and engage in various sports.
Led by **Alexandra Stribing**, an assistant professor at Kean University, the camp is part of a broader movement she has championed for the past **17 years** across **New York** and other locations in the United States. With the assistance of Kean University, she successfully introduced this empowering program to New Jersey **three years ago**. Each summer, college students volunteer as coaches, fostering a supportive environment that encourages participation in sports.
The camp operates at the **RWJBH Field of Dreams**, where children engage in sports programming tailored to their needs. One innovative approach includes the use of eye masks in soccer, ensuring that all participants compete on a more level playing field. This method not only enhances the experience but also promotes teamwork and inclusivity among the campers.
As the latest session of **Camp Abilities** wraps up, those interested in future opportunities or volunteering can find more information on their official website. This initiative highlights the importance of accessible sports programs, offering children the chance to build confidence, develop skills, and create lasting friendships.
The success of Camp Abilities illustrates the powerful impact of community support and adaptive sports on the lives of children with visual impairments. Through dedicated efforts like those of **Alexandra Stribing** and Kean University, the camp continues to transform dreams into reality for aspiring athletes.
