Choose the Right Sofa: Expert Tips for Pet-Friendly Homes

As pet ownership grows in the U.S. — with 51% of households owning dogs and 37% owning cats, according to the American Pet Products Association — many homeowners are adapting their interiors to accommodate their furry companions. However, this transition can lead to challenges. Data from Houzz indicates that one in three pet owners has had to replace sofas or soft furnishings due to damage caused by their pets.
To navigate this issue, I spoke with Lena Gierasinska, Head of Product and Design at Barker and Stonehouse, who offered valuable insights on selecting sofas that blend comfort, durability, and design. Here are her recommendations for creating a pet-friendly living space without sacrificing style.
Designing for Shared Spaces
Modern homes increasingly embrace the idea of sharing space with pets rather than isolating them. Gierasinska encourages homeowners to celebrate this bond. “Don’t hide the fact that your pets are part of the family, celebrate it,” she states. She suggests selecting sofas that are ample enough to accommodate both you and your pet, complemented by cushions and throws that can withstand shared use.
Choosing the Right Fabrics
When selecting fabric for pet-friendly sofas, it’s essential to consider durability. Gierasinska warns against using loose weaves like linen or tweed, which can easily snag on claws. “Their open texture can easily catch on claws, leading to pulls and snags over time,” she explains. Additionally, fabrics such as silk or delicate velvet, while luxurious, are prone to damage and wear in busy households.
High-pile fabrics also pose challenges, as they tend to trap pet hair, making them difficult to maintain. Instead, she recommends opting for materials with a smooth, tightly woven finish that naturally resists fur. “Microfibre is an excellent choice for pet households as it resists scratching and can be easily wiped clean,” Gierasinska notes.
Surprisingly, she mentions that velvet can be suitable if made from polyester, as it tends to be more durable due to its tighter weave.
Color and Texture Considerations
Choosing the right color is crucial for maintaining a clean and visually appealing home. Gierasinska advises against sofas in light colors, as they make it challenging to conceal pet hair or stains. “Mid-tones like charcoal, taupe, navy, and olive green work brilliantly for busy, pet-filled households,” she states. These shades not only hide everyday wear but also remain in style for years.
For added interest, subtle patterns and textures can help mask signs of pet activity. A gentle herringbone or basket weave pattern, for example, is more forgiving than a flat, pale fabric.
Understanding Fabric Durability
An often-overlooked factor in fabric selection is the rub count, which measures a material’s durability. According to Gierasinska, it is particularly important for homes with pets. “I always advise avoiding low rub counts, as these fabrics are far more likely to show wear and tear quickly,” she cautions. Instead, look for upholstery with a high rub count, ideally 80,000 or higher, to withstand years of use and maintain its appearance.
Practical Solutions for Pet Owners
Creating a pet-friendly environment does not mean compromising on aesthetics. Gierasinska recommends incorporating removable and washable elements such as throws and cushion covers. “A neatly draped throw or a set of machine-washable cushion covers not only protect your sofa but also help create a curated, cohesive look,” she explains.
Additionally, practical flooring options like wood or laminate can enhance the overall design while being easier to maintain. Keeping a lidded basket near the sofa for toys, blankets, or leashes can also help organize the space, making it easier to tidy up.
In conclusion, selecting the right sofa for a pet-friendly home involves thoughtful consideration of fabric, color, and design. By following these expert tips, homeowners can enjoy stylish interiors that accommodate their furry companions without frequent replacements.
