Princess Diana’s time capsule, buried 34 years ago, was unveiled at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London ahead of the anniversary of her death on August 31. The capsule was discovered earlier this year as part of preparations for the hospital’s new Children’s Cancer Centre. During a ceremony on March 17, 1991, Diana sealed the capsule while laying the foundation stone of the Variety Club Building.

The contents of the time capsule reflect the nostalgia of the early 1990s and include a diverse array of items. Notably, it features a CD of Kylie Minogue‘s album, Rhythm of Love, alongside a pocket television, a collection of British coins, and a solar-powered calculator. Also included are tree seeds in a bottle, a sheet of recycled paper, a snowflake hologram, and a European passport. A photograph of Princess Diana herself was found within the capsule, adding a personal touch to the historical artifacts.

The hospital revealed that the items were chosen by two young individuals who won a national competition, tasked with suggesting eight items that represented life in the 1990s. GOSH shared a photo of the items, noting that while some were damaged by moisture, they evoke a sense of nostalgia for a time before the internet’s dominance.

Significance of the Unveiling

The opening of the time capsule holds special significance for the staff at GOSH, many of whom were either born in 1991 or were part of the hospital’s team at that time. Jason Dawson, the Senior Responsible Owner for the Children’s Cancer Centre, remarked on the emotional aspect of the unveiling, stating that it allowed them to connect with “the hopes and inspirations of 1991.” He expressed that the experience was “really quite moving,” as it linked the present to memories planted by a previous generation.

As the hospital embarks on a new chapter with the construction of the Children’s Cancer Centre, the time capsule serves as a poignant reminder of the past, encapsulating a moment in time that resonates with both staff and visitors alike. The artifacts are not just a glimpse into the past but also foster a sense of continuity and connection within the community, celebrating the legacy of Princess Diana’s contributions to the hospital and its mission.

The discovery and unveiling of this time capsule highlight the enduring impact of Princess Diana, reminding the world of her compassion and commitment to children’s health. As GOSH continues to evolve, the memories contained within this capsule will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
