Power Outages Impact Thousands in San Diego County

Thousands of customers served by San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) experienced power outages beginning late on the night of March 16, 2024. The first significant outage occurred in Chula Vista at approximately 11:48 p.m., affecting over 3,000 residents. Initial reports indicate that a vehicle collided with power lines in the area, prompting immediate repair efforts by utility crews.
The specific locations impacted in Chula Vista included the intersections of East H Street and Hilltop Drive, as well as G Street at Bay Boulevard. SDG&E confirmed that their teams were on-site working to restore power, with an estimated restoration time set for 11 a.m. on March 17. The Chula Vista Police Department did not provide further details regarding the vehicle involved in the incident.
Another outage was reported near Pine Valley shortly before 5 a.m. on March 17, affecting several hundred customers. The cause of this outage remains under investigation, but power restoration is anticipated by 10 a.m. the same day.
Residents affected by the outages have been urged to stay informed through the SDG&E website, which provides updates on restoration efforts and safety information. As utility crews continue to address the situation, thousands in the region await the return of their electricity.
This series of outages highlights the vulnerabilities of electrical infrastructure to unexpected incidents, reminding communities of the importance of preparedness and responsiveness in the face of utility disruptions.
