Friends of the Arcata Marsh Launches ‘35@35’ Membership Drive

The Friends of the Arcata Marsh (FOAM) has initiated the “35@35” campaign to commemorate its 35th anniversary and to expand its membership base. The campaign aims to recruit at least 35 new members during 2025, reflecting the organization’s long-standing commitment to enhancing the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary, a beloved site in Humboldt County.
Founded in 1988, FOAM has played a pivotal role in preserving and improving the Arcata Marsh, which spans over 300 acres and features nearly five miles of trails, offering stunning views and habitats for various wildlife. While the City of Arcata owns and manages the marsh, FOAM’s contributions—ranging from educational programs to habitat conservation—have been instrumental. The organization provides numerous free activities to the public, fostering a deeper appreciation for the marsh’s ecological value.
Sue Leskiw, the membership coordinator and a longtime volunteer, expressed enthusiasm for the membership drive, noting that FOAM has not raised its annual membership fees in years. Membership costs start at just $18 for students and seniors, making it accessible for many. Leskiw shared that in her 27 years with FOAM, there has not been a focused membership campaign until now, making the “35@35” initiative a significant milestone.
“Many people may not realize how much FOAM contributes to the community,” Leskiw stated. “From funding interpretive signs to organizing educational tours, our work is crucial in maintaining the marsh’s beauty and accessibility.”
The organization has funded key projects, including the construction of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center and an amphitheater, raising over $13,000 for these efforts. FOAM also provides educational resources, such as guidebooks and brochures, and organizes docents to lead tours for schools and community groups. In the last fiscal year alone, FOAM facilitated 88 special-request tours, welcoming approximately 569 attendees.
Engaging the Community Through Education and Events
FOAM is dedicated to environmental education and community outreach. The organization hosts a monthly lecture series focused on science and conservation topics, and volunteers have been involved in local schools through programs like “Wetlands on Wheels.” Awards at the Humboldt County Science Fair and research grants for Cal Poly Humboldt students on ecological topics further illustrate FOAM’s commitment to educating future generations.
The organization also enriches the community through various events, including the long-running Student Bird Art Contest, which showcases local K-12 students’ artwork. This contest has been co-sponsored by FOAM for over two decades and continues to draw attention at events such as Godwit Days.
In addition to educational efforts, FOAM actively engages in stewardship activities like invasive plant removal and maintaining trails. Volunteers regularly empty dog waste disposal containers and advocate for the marsh’s preservation, ensuring its health for future visitors.
Invitation to Join and Celebrate
Membership with FOAM includes receiving a quarterly newsletter and updates on events. Those who join before mid-September will be invited to the organization’s annual meeting and a volunteer appreciation lunch on September 28, 2025. New members recruited during 2025 will also partake in a special event next January, where they will have the opportunity to win prizes, including nature-themed art and books.
For those who cherish the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary or are simply interested in supporting local conservation efforts, joining FOAM presents an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of this vital habitat. Membership forms can be accessed at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center or through the organization’s website.
Leskiw’s enthusiasm for FOAM’s mission and activities is palpable. “We are entirely volunteer-run and funded by our members,” she explained. “Every contribution helps us continue our work in making the Arcata Marsh a shining example of environmental stewardship.”
