Israel Plans Full Military Takeover of Gaza City by Mid-September

Israel is set to initiate a full-scale military operation in Gaza City by mid-September, following the mobilization of over 60,000 army reservists. This offensive is part of Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas, which has escalated in recent weeks. According to the Times of Israel, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will begin their advance after reservists report for duty on September 2, 2023. In anticipation, approximately 1 million Palestinians in Gaza City will be ordered to evacuate as early as this Sunday.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Katz issued a stark warning, stating that the “gates of hell” would open for Hamas if the group fails to meet Israel’s conditions for a cease-fire. Katz emphasized that the military operation aims to dismantle the terror organization and facilitate the release of remaining hostages. Reports indicate that around 50 Israelis are currently held by Hamas, with about 30 presumed dead and 20 believed to be alive.

The urgency of the military offensive has been underscored by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials, who view the situation of the hostages as critical. They are pushing to expedite the operation due to the deteriorating conditions faced by the captives in Gaza. Despite the military’s intentions, there are calls for the protection of civilians in Gaza City, with the IDF seeking to gain international support for their actions before proceeding.

Hamas has recently communicated through mediators that it accepted a partial cease-fire deal, which includes the release of 10 living hostages and the return of 18 deceased individuals in exchange for a 60-day truce. Nevertheless, Netanyahu insists that any agreement must secure the release of all remaining hostages. Negotiations are expected to resume in the coming days, with new talks scheduled outside of Doha, Qatar or Cairo, Egypt.

Israeli officials believe that the impending military operation may increase pressure on Hamas, potentially leading to a more favorable negotiating position. Meanwhile, protests continue in Tel Aviv, where thousands have gathered weekly to demand a resolution for the hostages. Activist Liran Berman, whose brothers were abducted, warned that escalating military action could jeopardize the lives of the remaining captives.

“There is a deal on the table,” Berman stated. “But deals do not last forever; their windows close fast and hard. This may be the last chance to save lives and to bring the fallen back.”
